7. I don't make icons or have any idea how, really (aside from cropping in paint, whee, I have leet skillz), but how are people who work to saturate or recolour or do whatever to images the ones with less of a life than "real iconists" who may work just as hard to chose fonts or borders and whatnot?

Altering colours and cropping well and chosing the right image frame seem to me just as important skills as doing whatnot with photochop. I'm not saying there aren't people putting out pointless batches of stuff only for the sake of doing it, but it doesn't mean that style of icon is bad.
