screwed up touchscreen phone

[personal profile] hornpile 2012-09-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
ok, I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else: I've got some random motorola phone (it was my dad's, he gave it to me when he got a new one) and it's been working fine for a few weeks. Until now.
Basically, the touchscreen seems to be... completely messed up. Most of the time it works, but sometimes it freaks out. Here's a list of things my phone has done of it's own accord, and is doing now as I speak:

scrolling up and down in a jarring, rapid fashion, typing the letters zdrzczzxxxr in to the text box, dialing my voicemail, calling my friends, sent an email to someone (I think, it might have failed) with the letters xdxxrc, tries to forward texts, selects all the text and starts typing, goes backwards and forwards, opens apps at random, and basically freezes up. When this happens I can't do anything because the touchscreen stops working. Also, certain parts of the screen stop working at times, so when I press the screen where the sign for messages is, it just selects the app button next to it instead.

Does anyone know what the hell would cause this? I think I'll get it checked out and see what I can do, but I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this, or if it's just a defect of this particular model. (Not sure what model it is, it's called a Milestone but I don't want to find out any more info in case the phone freaks out again.)

My husband's droid 2 had this issue, actually. We never figurd out exactly what caused it but we reckon it got a tiny bit of water in the crevices of the screen (he used it when it started to drizzle). When my phone gets so much as a drop of water on it, the screen goes insane. He needed to get a new phone :(

Something like this also happened to me because I had downloaded a few apps and apparently they conflicted with one another and my phone would type random things on its own. A hard reset fixed that.

I hope they replace the phone without hassle (if it comes to that)!

hmm, I don't know if water is to blame, but it could be a possibility. I've downloaded a few apps too, so that could be to blame for the typing- I've noticed the lj app keeps opening itself even though I don't ever use it. I'll delete it and see what that does and look in to doing a hard reset if I must. Thanks! =]

It's called "ghosting" (like a ghost-posessed phone) and I've a similar problems too.

There are many reasons for ghosting. For some people, it was a bad facebook app. (I removed it just in case but it didn't solve my issue.)

If you have a plastic screen protector, try taking that off and giving the screen a very thorough cleaning.

If you're using a third party usb/power cable, try using a motorola cable. Apparently, it's sensitive and third party doesn't always make it right.

If that fails, try returning to factory default.

If that fails, cook it.

For me, the only thing that worked was cooking it. Instead of an oven, I just removed the battery and memory card from my phone and left it touchscreen face down on a candle-warmer for 20 minutes. (I use the candle-warmer as a keep-coffee-hot-plate at work.) It has raised edges so no part of the phone was actually touching the hot plate. Then let it cool for a couple hours.

It still acts funny if it's too hot or too humid but works well enough to be usable.

Good luck!

oh, thank you! Lots of options there. I'm pretty sure my charger cable isn't 3rd party, so I guess that rules that one out, but I will start with app deleting I think and then see if I need to do the other things. Also never would have thought that cooking would be an effective way of solving the problem, but I guess it makes sense. Thanks =]
