I don't know. I've changed some of my own male characters into women (and vice versa) when I realized that they're more interesting that way.

Usually when I come across an original story that's a complete sausagefest for no logical reason I just get the vibe that the author went with the "default settings" of gender with each character and didn't put enough out-of-the-box critical thinking into them.

This. I'm not going to ~judge anyone~ for not using enough female characters, but sometimes there is just a mysterious lack of women even when there's plenty of room for them in the story and that makes me raise my eyebrows a little bit.
