It's not my job, as a writer, to "help represent more women in fiction." It's my job, as a writer, to tell a good story. If my writing is good, I get to further the agendas *I* want to support. That's my choice and you do not get to judge me because I use my fiction the way I want to. I'm not your tool.

While I don't judge people for writing mainly main casts, I do think the OP has...somewhat of a point. I see all these books where all the major characters are male and there is absolutely no reason for why one of them couldn't be female.

That's one thing I liked about the Hunger Games. Many female characters took on "traditionally male" roles. I wish I could see more of that. Obviously, if you're writing a historical piece, it's a bit more difficult to integrate female characters in the "exciting stuff", but I see no reason why this can't be the case in future and dystopian novels.

There's a point where that becomes tokenism.

If you're saying that half the cast needs to be female, then obviously we need some visible minorities in there, throw in a few black people and Hispanics. Oh, you have no gay/bi/trans people? Better add some! What do you mean you don't have any disabled people? Add some, quick!

Or. People could go the route of decent writing, and only add characters that add something relevant to the story, instead of trying to throw every possible token in there.

Oh dear... I'm mainly a m/m comic-illustrator/writer. A lot of my main characters are male. Gay/Bi men but men nonetheless.

Look, I appreciate a good character. I take a lot of care with writing them, regardless if they're male and female.

You're right, I'm going to abandon my natural voice immediately and start wedging a bunch of random women into m/m romances with two main characters and maybe three secondaries (at least one of which is always an important, non-matchmaking woman), just to pander to your personal views about the purpose of fiction. Quantity over quality, that's great writing advice. LOL at the pink and blue lettering.

I don't know. I've changed some of my own male characters into women (and vice versa) when I realized that they're more interesting that way.

Usually when I come across an original story that's a complete sausagefest for no logical reason I just get the vibe that the author went with the "default settings" of gender with each character and didn't put enough out-of-the-box critical thinking into them.

I'm in a fandom with three legitimate female characters- one is an ex-girlfriend, one is an older sister, and one works for the main character as his stylist. What do you want me to do? Make obnoxious OCs?
