I've never gotten what's so scary about him. cam someone explain it?
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-09-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Please! Tell us all about him! I must know everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Theoretically, there should be nothing scary about a mirror in a darkened room, or a window with the shade up at night, or the space under the bed, but it creeps some people out just the same.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason WHY it's scary tends to differ from person to person, but some common themes are:

-The facelessness. Human beings are programmed to look for faces, to the point that we'll see them in things that don't have them. So something that has no face where a face should be throws us off guard.
-The distorted proportions. Again, this hits our instinctual "warning buttons" that something is deeply off. It looks human, but not enough to be convincing.
-The silence and apparent lack of communication. There is no way to reason with this being.
-He appears in daylight and can teleport. Nowhere is safe.
-Child abduction. This one is terrifying for anyone who has kids.
-Organ removal.
-Slendersickness. There doesn't appear to be a cure.
-He appears to some people and not others, so if he appeared to you, you would have very few people who would believe you.
-In some of the earlier SA forum posts, slendy appeared as a totally convincing, ordinary human being, and his facelesness could only be viewed on film. Buckets of paranoia fuel.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Also adding:
-Messing with technology. In this age, we rely a LOT on things like mobile phones, cameras, computers, laptops, etc. Slendy renders our sophisticated technology useless.
-Memetic nature. Some have theorized that Slendy is a "tulpa" or "thoughtform" which can manifest into reality if enough people think about him. Even more paranoia fuel.
-Force of nature. In the early days, Slendy was associated with the forest, fire and water. Slenderman itself is practically a force of nature - uncontrollable, unpredictable, unstoppable - and brings back our old fear of these things.

If the "appears normal IRL" idea had stayed, he would terrify me a lot more. Oh god, I think that type of paranoia gets me the most.

[personal profile] flowersforone 2012-09-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's because he stands there....MENACINGLY!!!!

I think it's more of a psychological horror than anything else. Slenderman is supposed to always watch and he just appears and disappears at will so no place is safe because he will find you. In most series he doesn't directly hurt anyone rather he brainwashes people that he stalks to do his bidding. The scariness of the mythos comes from the fear of being watched or stalked, the fear of not being able to trust people and getting betrayed because of his power over people, and the fear of losing your own will, combined with the fact that technology doesn't work and doesn't help makes for a pretty scary combination for some. You also lose time when you're getting stalked by him. So it's a different sort of scariness I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely this.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Look up American Dallas Wiens. Humans tend to be scared of those with non-average facial features, just as they tend to be scared of any differences.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, anon. I feel like I shouldn't research him either, because somehow doing so will prompt him to find me. D: (Never going in woods again. Thanks for nothing, Marble Hornets. *sob*)

Play the Slender game with the daylight mod and the $20 mod. If that can't make him less scary for you I'm not sure what will.

THERE'S A GAME?!?!?

Yes.

If you're interested, I can link you funny/interesting playthroughs on youtube as well.

considering the "mythos" are basically spinoffs based off spinoffs based off spinoffs based off so on and so forth, why don't you just pick and choose the less scary bits. Like that he's only going after little children, and you're too old for his tentapied piper tastes.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what it is, but I find Slenderman more...enticing, than I do frightening. It just hits so many of my personal fascination points. If I saw such a thing irl I wouldn't run. Probably. Okay no, if something like that actually existed in real life I would crap my pants. But at the same time I'd be at least the tiniest bit tempted to let it take me.

Luckily for me I don't know much about him. :3

But isn't the very original story of slenderman supposed to be that he actually took care of lost children and returned them later? I remember it was sort of creepy-cute.

I had never heard of Slenderman until YGO:TAS (or whatever vid he first cameo'd in) and I think it broke me. He just doesn't scare me at all. And I usually avoid anything horror/thriller related, too!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, OP.
Me, I was seriously scared of the demon in Paranormal Activity (and I'm 24!)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck me the first one, with the paw/claw prints on the floor? Gets me every time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I was too, and I'm 26. I haven't been that freaked out by a movie since my mother for some reason let me watch 'The Exorcist' at the tender age of 7.

I had to read through this quickly because Slederman scares the hell outta me.

Even knowing that he's not even a real monster, just a product of SomethingAwfull, does not make him less scary. So, it's not just you anon that is scared of him. (Hell, even him being in parody video make me shiver. For goodness the Slenderman Gangnam style does nothing to stop my odd fear of him. I mean IT'S GANGNAM. It makes everything less scary and more funny)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
one time my friend asked me what slenderman was and if he was "real" so I was all "well basically he's this faceless dude who stalks you and you can't fight back and you can't hide because he'll always find you and he's totally right behind you right now" and she actually got all worked up and scared despite never really being exposed to it before
so idk slendy just scares the everloving piss out of everyone, don't feel bad

mmmmmm

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be scared of Slenderman but then I found some porn of him. gay, tentacle porn.

now he makes me horny as fuck.

[personal profile] escapedsnake911 2012-09-22 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother's going as him for Halloween, since he had to get a suit for another event. I'm going as Lumpy Space Princess, and we're going to be Trick-or-Treating for canned good for charity.

I cannot wait to confuse people.
