I've heard too much dumb shit in general concerning LGBT people. "Is this a new way of making themselves feel special? They're gay because they want to be women! They're lesbians because they can't get guys. We don't have gay people in out country because we're religious and we listen to God."

Some guy who insisted that the sun was a sun and not a star

A friend who doesn't think depression is real and that they should just be happy because it's totally easy

Oh god, on that middle note - classmate (doing physics and chemistry) who once said that Venus wasn't a planet because it was completely made of gas and thus had no surface (?), despite the fact that I linked him to pictures of the surface from one of the Veneras and the Magellan map, but one day, it'll turn into a sun (??), and then we can call it a planet (...???).

I did wonder if he had been reading too much 2010: Odyssey Two.

He also insisted that we knew nothing at all about space because the only people who knew anything about it were astronauts and they could be lying, once asked if neutrons in atoms were 'the oxygens', and ultimately ended up quitting physics (and I think high school altogether? I never really did see him after that) because he 'didn't agree with it'.

Not to mention Venus ISN'T completely made of gas. It has a very thick, opaque atmosphere and you can't see the surface, but it is a solid planet under the atmosphere. Unlike Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus, which are wholly gas.

Exactly! He still referred to THEM as planets, but not Venus, for some reason? I don't know, he kept talking about how no one's ever seen the surface, when we HAVE landed probes on it and taken photos, and have a fairly sophisticated map of it.

Yeah, that guy was nuts. Gas giants are planets. And if gas giants get big enough, their gravity does ignite them and they do become stars. But that could never happen to Venus, because it's NOT a gas giant. And probably will never happen to Jupiter, as it's not in a nebula, so isn't likely to ever get the necessary mass to ignite.

Yeah, that, and no one's actually found any monoliths ;)

But yeah, he was... uh... a creative thinker.
