Long of the short of it is: Spoony makes a rape joke towards JO. Lupa brings it up a month later. Spoony goes on a twitter rampage insulting Lupa/other TGWTG people. He then leaves the site. LordKat has a podcast calling Spooney a hack and rants about him for two hours.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was SO disgusted by people who blame Lupa for overreacting. What he wrote was super-tasteless and creepy, and I'm glad that she spoke up.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think everyone in that dramakerfluffle was overreacting, lol

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
What always got me was...why did she speak up, or call him out on in a full month later. I mean wouldn't that be a kinda 'right now' type of scenario?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Because Spoony was doing a lot of other really creepy things during that month. Like stalking his ex-girlfriend. The 'rape joke' (he said he wanted to chain JO to a pipe in his basement) was just the start of a downward trend in Spoony and the rape 'joke' was the most public thing she could use to try and address that Spoony was crossing lines without bringing the ex-girlfriend into thing and potentially endangering her.

...wait, Spoony was stalking Scarlett? Where/when/how? This is the first time I've ever heard mention of him STALKING her. I know he kind of whines about her a lot but... stalking? What?

The thing that I still don't get though is, if Spoony was crossing lines everywhere and so often, why didn't CA handle this with him directly and in private? They should have sent him emails or tried to talk to him face-to-face (or as face-to-face as you can get being miles away) about his behaviour and how it was making other producers uncomfortable and asked him to stop or to at least try to control himself. Channel Awesome as a whole should have done it and in private, instead of leaving Lupa to take it upon herself to call Spoony out and in public. If what he said really upset her, she could have also sent him an email and asked him to apologize or something, instead of writing that huge Tumblr post about him.

It seems to me that the whole thing could have been better handled between Spoony and CA, rather than letting us all see what was happening on twitter.

[personal profile] kayleen_san 2012-09-22 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought they had talked about it in private before (CA and Spoony, I mean). It's why he got suspended for 2 weeks before he got fired. Also, I thought Spoony said as much (that there were things going on in private way before the Lupa thing happened) in his To Boldly Flee Pt. 1 Commentary.

Oh, I see. I haven't watched the commentary of To Boldly Flee, so I didn't know. Apologies and thanks for the info.

I still think that Lupa should have called him out in private, especially if there were already things going on between Spoony and CA.

For the record: Spoony has said (in his To Boldly Flee commentary) his leaving the Site is mostly a business decision and is not related to the stuff with Lupa.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
...and you believe that?

He was dismissed after he went on an insane rampage against his coworkers for daring to disagree with him. Either this is the most coincidental "business decision" ever, or he was let go because he was fucking nuts.

...and you believe that?

I honestly don't know. I'm stating what he said. He did say he was put on three-month suspension for his actions, and decided not to come back.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair Rob stated that Spoony did leave and that he wasn't fired. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, yes it was. To phraphase him: "I don't need your money and you don't need my drama."

The thing on twitter really only expedited the whole thing.

And I believe this thread just proved secret's poster's point...

we, as fans, shouldn't even know about this things.
gethenian: (Roger durrrr)

[personal profile] gethenian 2012-09-22 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Why not?

Other than the potential "because it's not in the company's interest" (which could be true for a number of reasons, but could also be untrue for pretty much equally as many) has knowing any of this really affected how you watch videos or whether you go to TGWTG or Spoony's site or Blip to find them?

And as I said in a reply elsewhere -- no one got on a PA system and FORCED you to know this. You asked.

I'll try to explain myself as best as I can, and if I misspeak, I'm sorry before hand. Tl:dr version? I think fans shouldn't ask.

First of all, no, *I* didn't ask. In fact, although I follow most of the shows in TGWTG, I've been actively trying to avoid knowing about their personal lives more or less since Spoony broke up with Scarlett. Why? Because it's none of my damn business, and I think that, out of respect to them, fans shouldn't be actively looking for their personal information, at least not outside of what they choose to tell us in the videos themselves. And yet? I've found out about most of the dramas since them because sooner or later someone (a fan), comments about it in communities I frequent for other, non TGWTG content. And this is no fault of any of the contributors, but of the fans, and it is the fans who should stop sticking their noses into things. Taking the Spoony/Lupa incident as an example? As public as it was in twitter? There shouldn't be any sf_Drama, fandomwank_report, or similar threads around discussing Lupa's so-called fault. They had a public fall out, they fixed it behind closed doors, gave two statements, and fans should stop trying to fan the flames trying to make it bigger or a real Spoony vs. Lupa thing.

My problem is not with the contributors, or with what they choose to share with us, but with the fans' attitudes about it.

And yes, it did affect how I watched videos for a while, as knowing certain things made them incredibly awkward for me to watch. I like the videos, I admire many of them. But I think that the lengths some fans go to find information about their personal lives and to broadcast said information... it's a tad unhealthy.

So when I mentioned "This thing", I wasn't talking about the original tweet. I'm not even going to suggest that Spoony or anyone who has a web-based show stops hanging around social networks. I was talking about all the wank that followed caused by fans trying to second guess everyone's thoughts on the matter.

(FWIW, I also heard the stalking rumor. I don't remember if it was in sf_drama, or in the wank report, but it was being touted as fact)

suuuuuuuure it was, spoony cakes just keep thinking that

ayrt

I'd heard the parts about Spoony and Lupa, but I had no idea that LordKat was part of that too. jeeez.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. He really hated on Spoony, it was kind of amusing.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
If you call encouraging a bi-polar man to commit suicide with his brother's gun amusing I'd hate to see what your definition of hilarious is.

+1

The transphobia and homophobia were pretty "amusing" too. If by amusing you mean sickening.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I found it amusing that he ranted for an hour over something so overblown. Sorry if I don't take things as seriously as you do?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, Spoony's "BETRAAAAAAAAAAAAAYAL!!!!" outburst at that convention cost Lord Kat real interviews and career options, even after Lord Kat left the site.

What Lord Kat said on his livestream was horrendous and inexcusable, just wanted to provide the context.

just to be fair: although I think the joke was taken as a rape joke by some, the way he said it could've been taken as just an S&M joke. Still inappropriate and JO was totally right to tell him it made her uncomfortable, but I'm not sure he meant it to be a rape joke. (I don't like it either way, but I don't think it should've been brought up so long after the fact, either.)
