mmmmmmmhmmmmmm

please

mention anorexia out of context some more. not like it's an eating disorder or anything. pair it up with 'skank' that's a good idea too!

I'm sorry, your skeletally thin dolls look anorexic, and your "fashion" dolls are grossly tacky. There are other dolls out there. It seems very in context to me.

I don't like the dolls, I'm more of a robot collector honestly.

However, as someone who has had an eating disorder, I find it fucking rude to compare thin dolls to a mental illness. Sorry if that rustles your jimmies and all, but I feel it trivializes real problems.

You could've said "these dolls promote bad body image" and I'd have been fine. Your point would've stood.

Stop using anorexic to mean emaciated. Anorexia may be a cause of malnourishment but it isn't the only reason a person may be extremely thin. You're implying that all thin people are sufferers of a complex disorder tied heavily to mental issues.

It was a flippant comment, but I think it was a fair assessment in the sense that these toys, among with other images of "ideal women" that the media shoves down the throats of young girls, are a huge societal factor in the prevalence of anorexia in the West.

I don't think eating disorders is out of context with unnaturally thin dolls. There's whole body image ideals and issues that go along with kids and their toys (and adults with dolls and toys).

The skank thing, yeah, I'll give you that one.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I didn't like the tone and bringing it up with the word skank really feels trivializing. Saying "promotes bad body image" or "body issues" or something would've been great. idk. Not in a good place today and might be seeing things off.

I agree the wording was harsh and yeah paired with "skank" I can see the tone as coming off as offensive. np fellow anon, we all have those days.

The thing is, promoting an unhealthy body image is not the same thing as being a cause of an ED. There are genetic, hereditary, personality, social, and mental issues at play. I've suffered from an ED for seven years and the first thing you learn is that there's no one cause of EDs. You can't make someone have an ED, but you can trigger one or fuck with a susceptible person enough that the illness rears its head, same as with most mental illnesses. Attacking the fashion industry, the media, or children's toy lines doesn't address the fact that these are triggers, not causes.
