For such a...odd movie, this did have some lovely music that gets overlooked, such as Listen To Your Heart pars 1 & 2.
brightblueink: Gif of Femio from Princess Tutu being dramatic accompanied by the lyrics of "Never Gonna Give You Up" (Never gonna give you up)

Haha, I used to sing that song all the time as a kid. I had the song book for my piano, too.

I think it regularly makes favourites lists and top Disney song lists, so you're not alone.

I love it myself; not only is the song beautiful and haunting but the animation for it is just perfect.

I was just thinking this the other day. It is a really beautiful song.

I think I'd be shunned for saying this in the Disney fandom, but I honestly think that Menken and Schwartz (Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted) wrote better lyrics/scores together than Menken and Ashman (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid) did.

I agree with this. Though Lion King is hands down my favorite, Hunchback and Pocahontas are second and third, at least in terms of music.

Yes! Although I'm not a huge tLK fan. I love Be Prepared and Circle of Life, but the rest I can give or take. I'm a terrible Disney fan. XD;;

I just really love the score part. The songs are pretty good, but the score is amazing.

Agreed. Hunchback has the best music ever. I mean the Bells of Norte Dame, what an opening. It leaves me breathless.

UGH I KNOW. Every single song in that movie is just fantastic, outside of A Guy Like You imo. And it's not just the songs, but the score itself. It's seriously disappointing that the film doesn't get more love from Disney for its music alone.

It's a beautiful song, OP. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think the movie as a whole had an amazing score overall. Which is why a little part of me is sad that it doesn't get more love. [Yes, I understand that problematic parts of it - but that doesn't mean I don't think the score is amazing]

I love the movie. I acknowledge the problematic elements and don't defend them, but I still love the film.

I love it too, despite the flaws. I think I give it a bit more leeway given that the source material for the Pocahontas story, namely the account of one John Smith, is probably as close to reality as any fairy tale to begin with, which makes general historical accuracy less necessary.

Me too. I'm from a country where we don't teach about Pocahontas until university level (and that's only if you're doing american studies) so I didn't know it was wrong or even real. I just really liked the story and always admired Pocahontas because she followed her dreams. And I liked that it didn't end happily ever after like other Disney movies I've seen.

But then again, I'm probably a weird disney fan. I love Atlantis as well. :D

Wouldn't call it the best (not while everything in Aladdin still exists) but yeah, both versions of that song are great.

Lies! Nothing beats 'Gaston'. Antlers in all of his decorating! ;D

[personal profile] kayleen_san 2012-09-26 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
And every last inch of him IS covered in hair. That's pretty darn impressive, IMO.

YES.

No one's neck's as incredibly thick as Gaston!

Oh god, I came here to say this.
I unironically love that song. And now it's in my head again!

[personal profile] la_petite_singe 2012-09-26 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's because Stephen Schwartz is flawless. He wrote SO MANY of the Disney [and non-Disney] songs that make me bawl.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
It helps when you find out reading the artbook interviews that 'Colours of the Wind' was one of their first, strongest ideas for the film and everything else was sort of built around it. It is literally the heart of the film/story.

'Pocahontas' was deeply special to me and my BFF at 12 anyway, so yeah.
