Err well...I actually do think dubs have decreased in quality in the last few years.

I used to be pretty staunchly into dubs, with few exceptions (was generally not a big fan of Viz's work). I ALWAYS advocated the English release (not as in, YOU MUST WATCH THE DUB, but as in, 'the dub is great, and there's always the sub option'). But in the past three years or so?

Eh. Yeah it's far from being abysmal like 4kids, but most dubs are Funimation now and I find the majority of their work to be kind of cringe worthy these days. I used to be a BIG fan, but I find both their dub work and their marketing to be quite obnoxious for the most part now. And their scripts are so often terrible.

Yeah, the fact that nearly all dubs these days are using the same limited pool of VAs--who aren't terrible, but also tend to use the same voice for every character--makes nearly every dub sound the same. They're tolerable, but not much else.

Yeah the voice actors don't mix it up much. I mean I can't really blame them. They're getting paid peanuts, but it still makes for a whole lot of meh.

Part of this has to do with piracy. SORRY MY BAD FOR BRINGING THIS HERE but while the dub companies did their fair share of stupid shit (looking at you ADV), the decline in sales thanks to torrenting and crap really hit hard. When dub companies close their doors, others don't crop up to replace them, the resulting assets just get shifted to the remaining few.

I, for one, am bloody tired of hearing the Vancouver crowd. Wendee Lee was good in one, ONE, role, and after that I got tired of hearing her stupid voice.

No it's understandable. It is relevant to the conversation. I'm not so much "UGH SO TIRED OF HEARING THESE SAME VOICE ACTORS" as I am "wow they are sounding increasingly worse and the scripts are getting crappier."

Although piracy doesn't really excuse how bad Funimation's scripts are. That's just... badness on their end.

Oh yeah Ocean Group. I haven't really seen many dubs from them lately? But back in the day... I was very hit or miss with their dubs. I've liked Wendee Lee in a few roles, but I do think that Faye is still the best she's ever done.

Except no.

The anime bubble burst wasn't due to declining sales as much as way too much supply and not enough of demand. Anime middleman companies were pushing out any anime they could license, regardless of quality, simply because they thought it could sell like hotcakes because it was anime. Plus torrenting wasn't even that popular when that bubble burst. Regardless, massive downloading has always happened, even during the high peak of the anime boom. It didn't help at all that the economy went through a recession soon after, which is a much bigger factor than piracy.
