Yeah, I feel the same way. Yes, some dubs aren't that great, and there's still certain directors or VAs I cringe at when I realize they're working on a dub, but not all dubs are bad these days. I like watching both versions the majority of the time.

Maybe that mecha just likes the Dutch and has an extra plane ticket?

But, yeah, I agree.

The Black Lagoon dub gets a lot of things right but reduces Revy to Generic Female Anime Protagonist Who Happens To Say Fuck A Lot

I don't hate dubs, but Japanese VAs tend to have better range. Plus listening to another language is fun.

I'm ESL so I find watching English dubs pointless. Plus, watching subs is pretty good for my Japanese studies, I've found that it's helped me a lot.

I have to agree with this. Often my first exposure to a new series is through the dub, and although they aren't always good there are some gems out there as well. Sometimes I like the dubs better than the original Japanese (although these are very rare occurrences), and overall if there is a dub I'll at least give it a listen.

And yeah, not all subs are good either...

I actually hate most voice actors around for dubs now. They all seem cringe-worthy, not like my favorite VAs that did so many good shows back in the late early 2000's.
I mean, who's a good voice actor that's still working? Johnny Yong Bosch (which ymmv)?

Ah, dub-hating. A phenomenon that occurs mostly in middle-schoolers just getting into anime. Provided the people you're speaking of are in that category, they'll grow out of it eventually. If not, well...

Run, OP! To the other side of the fandom; run!

I prefer to watch media in their original language. Change the actor, and you'll change the performance and that means the characterisation changes. Sure, things are always lost in translation, but I want to pick the version with the least loss.

Also, I'm not American so watching their dub would be pretty pointless to me. I think Americans sometimes forget that the English-speaking fandom is pretty international and a lot of us aren't familiar with the U.S. versions of things. It took me quite a while to realise that "Joey", "Tristan" and "Téa" weren't just really popular OCs in the YGO fandom...

...Nah, most of them are still pretty bad. Anime voice actors over-act WAY too much. They sound like they're trying way too hard to be an anime character instead of just a character.

Why do you think a huge amount of anime voice actors don't ever do anything BUT anime (with a few exceptions such as Steve Blum)? Because they're not actually good enough to be hired to work on American cartoons. It sure as hell isn't because voice acting for anime pays well enough to do that alone.

I feel like so many anime fans are really embarrassed about how weaboo they used to be and are now overcompensating by pretending that dubs are a lot better than they actually are. They're better than they WERE, but still not "good" (again, with some exceptions).

I like both, but I tend to prefer to watch subs these days (well, raws in most cases, because I have a fondness for kiddy series and they hardly ever get subbed) mainly because I have a fascination with certain Japanese seiyuu. I don't even think the acting in most dubs are bad, I just like to hear my favorites.

But people who hate all dubs? I just assume they're trying to be cool.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-09-25 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Err well...I actually do think dubs have decreased in quality in the last few years.

I used to be pretty staunchly into dubs, with few exceptions (was generally not a big fan of Viz's work). I ALWAYS advocated the English release (not as in, YOU MUST WATCH THE DUB, but as in, 'the dub is great, and there's always the sub option'). But in the past three years or so?

Eh. Yeah it's far from being abysmal like 4kids, but most dubs are Funimation now and I find the majority of their work to be kind of cringe worthy these days. I used to be a BIG fan, but I find both their dub work and their marketing to be quite obnoxious for the most part now. And their scripts are so often terrible.

I don't hate dubs, but I also feel that (in a lot of cases) English voice actors don't take it quite as seriously as the original language voice actors. There's quite a bit of overlap in America of voice actors/screen actors, whereas a lot of original voice actors are just voice actors. I'm not sure about statistics or anything, but that's just the way it seems to me.

(Or maybe I haven't heard many good English VA.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i will never watch anything dubbed. i used to watch a lot of anime dubbed before (slayers, gundam wing etc) but i can't stand them anymore. i don't like hearing westerners talk "cute/moe" it's weird and kind of really annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
meh. I tend to prefer subs. Because I like the Japanese voices. Even in recent dubs I think half the characters sound like surfers.

Some dubs *are* good (the original Last Exile, Irrepressible Captain Tyler), but I decided to try GTO and.. just no.

I think it is a preference. And that is ok.

I vastly prefer dubs. If at all possible, I try to wait for a series to get dubbed before watching it at all. Japanese voices grate on my nerves most of the time. It's harder for me to get into the scenes. There are a handful I fawn over, but as a whole, it doesn't work for me.

I do wish there was more variety in dub voice actors. It gets a bit tiring to hear the same ones in every series, no matter how much I enjoy them.

I couldn't care less if people want to watch it subbed or dubbed. I just hate the constant bashing I come across. It's basically saying if you watch it dubbed, you're doing it wrong. If we both enjoyed the series, it should be left at that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have seriously never understood why people even like dubbed media. I understand why it happened, to gain a broader appeal, but are people really so uncultured and uneducated that they want everything dumbed down for them? Oh no, it's in another language! HORROR!

It's not even that I hate the dubs. I just hate the mindset that created dubbed media in the first place. It's the same mindset that made people walk out of Pan's Labyrinth and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, freaked out that they were icky foreign language movies.

There are PLENTY of bad subs, people are just incapable of realizing it. A bro of mine is now fluent in japanese, and some of their favorite shows have TERRIBLE voice acting.

And seriously, they've improved a lot.

I can watch both, and there are some English VAs I really love, but if I have the choice I prefer subs, something about reading a stupid line rather than hearing it just reduces the embarrassment squick for me. Except for Cowboy Bebop if I'm watching Bebop it's got to be the dubs. I tried the subs and couldn't get past the first episode.

Many of the elitist don't give dubs a shot. They're stuck in the old mindset where everything was changed and edited for younger audience. They click on the dub, hear one line, and run like the wind. Everything deserves a chance.

[personal profile] femme_androgyne 2012-09-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* I prefer subs because I'd like to get as close as possible to seeing a piece of media in the way it was originally produced. I feel the same way about foreign-language films and TV shows that aren't anime, too. Obviously, subs can have translation errors, etc., but dubs can have those and simultaneously miss all sorts of nuances of emotion/whathaveyou that were conveyed vocally, so, whatever. Still closer. That might not be as important to some people, but it is to me.

ETA: I do think it's kind of funny when either dub or sub preferers will accuse whichever they don't like of all sounding the same, though. Both draw from fairly small pools, so if you listen to a lot of either, you'll hear the same people over and over again. Personally, I like playing 3 Degrees of separation from Takehito Koyasu.

I guess if given a choice, I generally will watch the english dub of an anime over subtitles. It's just a matter of prefering to listen to a show in my native language. And in most cases, I'm not too picky about the quality of the voices, so long as it's not ear-splintering awful and hasn't been heavily censored in localization. That's only for animation though. If I'm watching something live-action, I can't stand to listen to a dub. Have to have subtitles because otherwise the inconsistant mouth movement is too obvious and distracting.

What I hate is when something gets licensed and even now I will still see someone moaning and whining about how "OMG it's gonna get dubbed and they're gonna BUTCHER it." Unless your show got grabbed by 4Kids or similar, then no, it's not probably going to be 'butchered,' and even if the dub is terrible the subbed version will still be there, unedited, on the DVD for you to watch. It's not the 90s anymore, when we were stuck with dubbed DBZ and Sailor Moon and at the time there seemed to be no chance of ever getting to see the unedited original. Outside of kids shows like Pokemon, most everything that gets licensed gets an unedited release, so panicking that your show is going to be completely ruined and edited into oblivion is pretty ridiculous.
