I want to pick the version with the least loss.

Interesting that people seem to think that's the sub. To me, the least loss is clearly in the dub, because it matches the overall experience better. I can listen and watch the action, as a Japanese viewer would. If I have to read, it's a completely different experience.

That's assuming of course that the dub is well-made, with a good ADR director. But then again, if the dub a company puts out is crap, their subs probably are, too. Just a thought.

But dub in foreign language is just alienating experience. And in my country everyone gets used to reading subs from early age anyway. There's plenty of american shows in tv, none of them aren't dubbed, and people wouldn't want them dubbed.

The problem is that as a small country we don't have much ways to import and localize entertainment by ourselves. For japanese, signing papers is apparently so costly operation that they're interested mostly in big audiences, and are hesitant with new business partners, that's what I've heard anyway.

Especially games tend to arrive to Europe through USA, which means there's often only dub available. This irritates people, since dubs may be part of american experience and otaku culture, but not ours. This may affect even sale numbers. Most rants happen in local forums though, and internationally we try to be more polite about it. Of course just getting jrpgs here is a huge progress. But it remains as a frustrating situation.

Kyo Kara Maoh is here to prove you wrong. There's a character named Yuri, and he gets made fun of for his name. In Japanese, it's a play on a banking/financial saying, and the show runs with the fact that his dad was apparently so obsessed with his job that he named his kid after his work. In English, the joke is different: it's short for urine.

Family dynamics/clever humor vs a potty joke. I'll take the subs, thanks.
