I have seriously never understood why people even like dubbed media. I understand why it happened, to gain a broader appeal, but are people really so uncultured and uneducated that they want everything dumbed down for them? Oh no, it's in another language! HORROR!

It's not even that I hate the dubs. I just hate the mindset that created dubbed media in the first place. It's the same mindset that made people walk out of Pan's Labyrinth and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, freaked out that they were icky foreign language movies.

Isn't it nice to know that many who started out on dubs moved onto subs?

It is sad when great works of art are overlooked because they're foreign. But the culture shock is easy to understand. (Not a great example, but I was shocked to see real palm trees on my visit to Florida) It's common to request back home amenities when moving to a new country. Some people just need time to adjust.

I imagine anyone with visual impairments or reading difficulty might appreciate a dub in a language they can understand.

Um? I understand why you don't understand xenophobic reasons for liking dub, but there's wide variety of reasons people have for preferring dub that have nothing to do with sub being foreign.

Dubs are not "dumbed down". Reading a movie is not the same experience as watching/listening to it, and you are not smarter because you watch subs.

To quote Nabashin, "My shows were not meant to be read."

As someone who grew up watching dubbed versions of Hollywood movies, I have a pretty good perspective on the dubbing world, from English and into English (hint: Americans are left in the fucking dust compared to dubbing industries in other countries. Mostly because we've had a lot more experience translating your movies than you have translating ours. People in the US don't care about foreign movies, so translators have no incentive to do a good job. Here, the majority of the population watches dubbed media, so if the quality sucks, people are more likely to complain.)

Hell, I just finished watching a dubbed version of Games of Thrones, and it was fucking good. I would recommend it over the subtitled version anyday to a non-English speaker. And I say this as someone who's read the book (in English) and seen the series (in English) several times.

Get off your high, elitist horse already.

French. I'm not sure if it was French Canadian or France French, the accent seems pretty neutral. But it's a region 1 disc.

Daenerys' voice wasn't all that great, she sounded a lot like she was reading, but the rest were fine, and the translation was good. The lip-syncing was stellar.

Well, I grew up with subs, an I can actually read the subs and look at the pretty pictures at the same time. You probably would too if you came from a place where subs are the norm.

You're also missing the point. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that that's the only acceptable way or the best way.

Did you miss the "My shows are not meant to be read" quote? No matter how much practice you get at it it's not going to be an identical experience.

Not an identical experience, maybe, but as someone who grew up watching things with subtitles and is still more comfortable with them than without even if I do understand the language, I can definitely certify that the experience is not that of "reading the show". You don't notice that you're reading; you're just understanding and following along with the action. Someone who says "My shows are not meant to be read" strikes me as someone who doesn't do a lot of watching things with subtitles.

It's never going to be exactly the same experience if it's being translated into a different language at all, no, but hearing the original actors' voices and emoting is inevitably going to be closer to the original than a dub that replaces the actors altogether. The question is mostly whether having the subtitles is going to distract you or make the story feel distant and unreal, and if you've watched more things with subtitles than without in your life, that's not going to happen - this is just how you're used to consuming fiction.

I like dubs because I can do other shit (cooking, cleaning ect.) while watching my shows. I can't do that if it's sub because I need to be constantly looking at the screen.
