I would say ask first if the meme is alive. Just say "hey, I have an idea for a fill, but it's a little different from what you're asking. Would it be okay if I...?" And then wait a short time for an answer, depending on how active the meme is.

If the meme is dead or the prompt remains silent (implying it's not being tracked), I think those have a free pass for anything, IMO.
