How much deviation away from a kink meme prompt is acceptable? If it's the basic plot of the prompt for the first thousand words, and then turns into your story for the next 20000 words, is it okay to post to the kink meme with it? What if the prompts have been dead for 2-5 years?

If I embed the (very simple) prompt into a thirty thousand word story, and it's not quite the main focus (features heavily, yes, main focus, no), can I still post to that prompt?

(Talking about multiple stories, to multiple prompts, all to a dead kink meme)

...if I do it anyway and pretend I'm trolling, am I a bad person?

I'd say if you pretended you were trolling you probably wouldn't get a favorable response. I've seen plenty of prompts go this way, as long as the original request features (and features heavily apparently?) then it wouldn't be a big deal imo.

If you were writing like a completely different pairing/setting from the prompt though...that might change things a bit. Though a disclaimer "this turned into a monster, sorry if I deviated" would prolly work too.

You could also always link to it as "Relevant To Your Interests" if you think it's wandered to far afield to be considered a straight fill.

I would say ask first if the meme is alive. Just say "hey, I have an idea for a fill, but it's a little different from what you're asking. Would it be okay if I...?" And then wait a short time for an answer, depending on how active the meme is.

If the meme is dead or the prompt remains silent (implying it's not being tracked), I think those have a free pass for anything, IMO.

I think it's more the type of deviation that matters. Switching the pairing, not including the requested kink, doing things the requester specifically said no to, and writing a fic that otherwise just goes against the spirit of the prompt (for example, they wanted fluffy sex, and your fic kills off the characters) are the basic no-nos, in my opinion.

But writing a fic that takes off and becomes more complex than the prompt called for is perfectly normal in my experience. As long as it features what prompter wanted, and in sufficient quantities, I think it's all right.

If you really feel like your fic doesn't fit the prompt enough, though, you can always write it but not make it a fill. Post it off the meme, and maybe mention that you were inspired by the prompt but took it in a different direction. I've seen people do this and also link it to the original prompt, with a short note saying, "Hey, I don't know if this counts as a fill or not, but this prompt inspired it."

In any case, I wouldn't say that you're trolling. That's not going to endear you or your fic to anyone, and it sounds like you have good intentions in writing the fic.

If the prompt has been dead for a long time, the prompter might be tracking comments on the thread. Unless you use kinks or elements they specifically request not to use, I think they'd probably be happy to see ANYTHING relating to the scenario in the prompt. At least that's what I think. But then again, all these years later I still sometimes hope someone will fill my Liz Shaw/Chantho prompt on the long-quiet DW kink meme...

I don't see why that would be a problem. I once took 30000 words to get to the focus of the prompt and the OP loved it.
