I think it's more the type of deviation that matters. Switching the pairing, not including the requested kink, doing things the requester specifically said no to, and writing a fic that otherwise just goes against the spirit of the prompt (for example, they wanted fluffy sex, and your fic kills off the characters) are the basic no-nos, in my opinion.

But writing a fic that takes off and becomes more complex than the prompt called for is perfectly normal in my experience. As long as it features what prompter wanted, and in sufficient quantities, I think it's all right.

If you really feel like your fic doesn't fit the prompt enough, though, you can always write it but not make it a fill. Post it off the meme, and maybe mention that you were inspired by the prompt but took it in a different direction. I've seen people do this and also link it to the original prompt, with a short note saying, "Hey, I don't know if this counts as a fill or not, but this prompt inspired it."

In any case, I wouldn't say that you're trolling. That's not going to endear you or your fic to anyone, and it sounds like you have good intentions in writing the fic.
