Re: What is your favorite play?

Hamlet. I know, I know it's so...everyone always says Hamlet. But I read it as a teen and something about that play just made an impact and stuck. I re-read certain parts pretty regularly.

Edit: I realized I read this as asking what is your favorite play to read, not to watch or listen to. I have many favorites if you include that. Favorite musical would be Jesus Christ Superstar or Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. I think JCS wins by a smidge but I adore both. Among many others.

It's whatever play(s) you like in any sense. I meant it as favorite play to watch*, but when I like a play I've seen I usually want to read it too.

*I assume watching a play = live in a theatre, but recordings make theatre more accessible as not everyone lives in major city with many large and small theatres like I do. And sometimes it takes a surprisingly long time for even seasoned theatre-goers to check a certain play off the life list of read plays. I somehow managed to see multiple oddities including Rodgers and Hammerstein's Allegro and Sondheim's Pacific Overatures over eight years before I ever saw a staged production of Hamlet.
Edited (looked it up and after seeing Hamlet finally in 2010, it's 8 years for Allegro (2002) and 12 for Pacific Overatures (1998). Longer ago than I thought!) 2012-09-26 00:37 (UTC)

I always feel like a lame-o when people ask what Shakespeare I know best and I'm all ACTUALLY I'VE BASICALLY MEMORIZED GIANT CHUNKS OF HAMLET, AND I'M KIND OF OBSESSED WITH OPHELIA, so let us be Hamlet dorks together!

This is pretty much my mental reaction when people ask about Shakespeare, but then I try and play it all cool and am like "Yeah, Hamlet's kind of nice." But really I'm a giant nerd mentally flailing about in excitement about Hamlet and my obsession with Ophelia and Polonius and and and

I basically spent most of my downtime senior year of high school reading the nunnery scene over and over and over again because I am clearly unhinged. Though it was cool at a party once somebody said something about Great Danes (meaning the dog) and I blurted out LIKE HAMLET and a person I had never met before started fistpumping with me.

And tonight I was at my nerdy Shakespeare thing and one guy started doing a Laertes monologue and all I could think was AAAAHHH LAERTES SQUEE
