brightblueink: Chane from Baccano! looking very serious. (Chane)

I'm not 100% sure since I never really watched that show, but...I don't think Disney actually made W.I.T.C.H.? I think it was originally from France or Belgium or something like that. I think they just dubbed it.

The comic is originally Italian. Don't know about the cartoon.

Wow, I was way off...

Not too far!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The comic is still going, though (but is not as good as it used to be).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Although, admittedly, I like the one-shots that have been publish lately; they are kind of cute. But the magic bus where they teach children magic? WHAT THE FUCK.

Yeah, those were just weird.

I wish they'd kept releasing the comics. They were SO INTERESTING. I love series like this. It was so fun to have around, and then it went away. And I can never find good scanslations.

I wish WITCH had had a better cartoon, it was dark and ugly. =/

The comic is so cute and colorful. I love the character designs and the girl´s adventures. It´s magical girls a la Disney!!

The comic is still being published in Italy, but its popularity has declined and was cancelled in other countries. :(

The comic used to be so good, but then it just went completely downhill in quality. It was so frustrating, especially since it was so obvious where they went wrong. By the time it was cancelled in my country, all I really cared about anymore was the girls' school life. Their teachers were some of the most hilarious side characters I've ever seen, and I would have paid serious money for a Horseberg/the art teacher sideplot.

And I wish Orube had been in the cartoon. She was so amazing.

spoilers

Was it Will's boyfriend? Matt or something? I remember reading this in the comic, like, he came out and said he'd knew that they were magical all along and stuff and then he upgraded their powers... tbh, it really looked like it came out of nowhere and it even frustrated me to a point, because the girls (Will especially, who was on the verge of telling Matt a couple of times about her powers just so they could be in a relationship) had been trying so hard not to let their boyfriends know about their secret identities... and it turns out Matt knew all along? WTF? That was when I stopped reading for good.

I genuinely felt stupid as a reader, like the creators were really just trolling me.

What? Orube was not in the cartoon? I never watched it because I never liked the looks of it, I liked the comics way more, but I had no idea... This seems very strange, though. I mean, she was with the girls for quite a lot of volumes, if I remember correctly, so how could they not include her in the cartoon? And why?

Anyway, I agree with your comment. I'm Italian and I started following the comics just before they became popular in Italy and I loved them. I read them for quite a while, then stopped when things started to go wrong. I miss it sometimes, because it was just so good at the beginning and it's a real shame this had to happen to it.

The cartoon ended with the second story arc (or their own total AU version of it in which Caleb is Nerissa's son or something), so they never had the chance to introduce Orube.

I am suddenly glad that I never watched the cartoon.

Yeah, that part was fucking stupid.

I really loved the cartoon and liked most of what they did with the property, but that was just "wut."

...I also just don't like Caleb in general, and that didn't help.

I wish this show was still on.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I really love the art in this secret. The idea to show her ribcage caught in the glow is brilliant!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Iirc correctly, W.I.T.C.H. was started up independently by a former Disney employee working in the Franco-Italian-Spanish BD industry. It got picked up by a kids magazine and did so well that Disney either bought it up OR pulled some dickish move claming that since it had been created while the artist was on their pay roll and it was legally theirs anyway. Bottom line is, started an original personal project, and got bought up and disnatured somewhat by the big studio.

I read somewhere that the creators were basically kicked out of the comic. I have nothing to back this up except my own hunch, but to me it's obvious that they wanted to do something with Cedric/Elyon. There were so many subtle touches about them in the first six volumes and then bam, all of it is gone right around the time when other people took over the project.

Are you sure about this? I'm Italian, I regularly bought W.I.T.C.H. #1 right as it came out back in the day and I'm pretty sure that it was a regular Disney monthly issue, in the same format introduced by the the then-largely successful PKNA. From a simple buyer's perspective, it looked to me that they were trying to replicate PKNA's success, ~for girls~
It's the same format they later used for all their experiments in this format... OP, have you checked out Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine, Kylion, Monster Allergy and whatsitsname with the horror twist and Goofy as protagonist, if they're available in your country? I think that's all they tried... ah yes, and Speed Loops' #0 some four years ago, but in never got past that stage. Pity that, I think it had potential.

[personal profile] green_hellfish_of_doom 2012-10-05 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was started by an italian division of Disney who focuses it comics. The whole thing was started by Barbara Canepa, Alesandro Barbucci (of skydoll) and Elizabetha Gnone (who did the fairy oak books)
Eventually they were driven out of the comic.
