Iirc correctly, W.I.T.C.H. was started up independently by a former Disney employee working in the Franco-Italian-Spanish BD industry. It got picked up by a kids magazine and did so well that Disney either bought it up OR pulled some dickish move claming that since it had been created while the artist was on their pay roll and it was legally theirs anyway. Bottom line is, started an original personal project, and got bought up and disnatured somewhat by the big studio.

I read somewhere that the creators were basically kicked out of the comic. I have nothing to back this up except my own hunch, but to me it's obvious that they wanted to do something with Cedric/Elyon. There were so many subtle touches about them in the first six volumes and then bam, all of it is gone right around the time when other people took over the project.

Are you sure about this? I'm Italian, I regularly bought W.I.T.C.H. #1 right as it came out back in the day and I'm pretty sure that it was a regular Disney monthly issue, in the same format introduced by the the then-largely successful PKNA. From a simple buyer's perspective, it looked to me that they were trying to replicate PKNA's success, ~for girls~
It's the same format they later used for all their experiments in this format... OP, have you checked out Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine, Kylion, Monster Allergy and whatsitsname with the horror twist and Goofy as protagonist, if they're available in your country? I think that's all they tried... ah yes, and Speed Loops' #0 some four years ago, but in never got past that stage. Pity that, I think it had potential.

No, it was started by an italian division of Disney who focuses it comics. The whole thing was started by Barbara Canepa, Alesandro Barbucci (of skydoll) and Elizabetha Gnone (who did the fairy oak books)
Eventually they were driven out of the comic.
