Adam Muto says BMO is genderless, but Pen's said that there's a switch on BMO's back that can set the gender.

Is BMO officially genderless? I've been watching episodes as my friend feeds them to me so I figured BMO was...

Well, I figured they'd been assigned one way or the other but surprisingly I don't think my brain actually decided.

BMO has been called by both female pronouns and male pronouns, depending on the episode. I'd written one or the other off as a mistake, but I didn't know which one. However, hearing that Muto and Pen have said BMO is ambiguous or changeable... that's interesting.

God damn I love Adventure Time.

Ooo, where was BMO called by female pronouns?

I only noticed them calling BMO by zer name until, I think, somewhere in season two when they started calling BMO 'him'. I'd like to know where I've missed other pronouns, if you can remember any instances.

I wish I could remember which episode/s, but I don't. Male pronouns were used in an ep within the last couple of months, and I remember female pronouns being used a long time ago, probably first season. The first time I heard a pronoun applied to BMO it was a female one, and the most recent time I've heard a pronoun applied to BMO it was a male one.

I want a switch on me that can set my gender. That'd be so fucking handy.

Sounds like kink meme fuel!

Wasn't thre an episode where BMO pretends to be a 'human boy' in front of a mirror?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
keyword being pretend

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Keyword it views its gender as male. Which means it has chosen a gender. Which means it is not mentally genderless. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
If a genderqueer individual presents with one gender at any time, then they are that gender forever. Just like a bisexual individual having sex with one gender makes them that-gender-sexual.

The more you know~

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I swear in the Adventure Time comics everyone refers to Beemo as "he". Plus since Beemo's not really alive (ie a robot) I'm not entirely sure that counts, since it'd fall under android/robot/computer?

I think I recall that while Finn and Jake say 'he', Bubblegum refers to BMO as a she? I'm not 100% sure of that.

I always see robots as genderless and find it weird whenever they're referred to as a boy or girl. Though I'm used to hearing he/him used neutrally, people in fandoms always take that as meaning they're a boy so even that bothers me now. :\

But yeah, I wouldn't go around acting like BMO is some sort of genderqueer representation since they're a robot and not a more humanoid being.

This confused me briefly as I couldn't understand why someone would make a -tan for a bank.

hello, canuck-anon

I also think of the Bank of Montreal whenever I see BMO.

+1 for using the singular they.
