I don't get the fat jokes meme. I see them every so often on tumblr. But where is the origin from?

The source material. And that BBC Sherlock mentioned BBC Mycroft's diet and whatnot a lot in the first season.

Ma, I don't remember that. I need to reread the stories. Thanks.

First introduction of Mycroft from The Greek Interpreter:

"Heavily built and massive, there was a suggestion of uncouth physical inertia in the figure, but above this unwieldy frame there was perched a head so masterful in its brow, so alert in its steel-gray, deep-set eyes, so firm in its lips, and so subtle in its play of expression, that after the first glance one forgot the gross body and remembered only the dominant mind."

BBC!Sherlock had to basically lampshade the fact that Mark Gatiss is a human toothpick.

Which, honestly, pisses me the hell off. Mycroft is fat and brilliant. We need more fat and brilliant and intrinsically valuable characters on the screen, busting the fat-hate. Instead? We get... fat jokes applied to a skinny man.

Good job, there, writers. Assholes.

The only redemption in it is that at least they didn't deliberately cast the role to be thin, Gatiss just REALLY WANTED to play his favorite character and since it's his show...

Mycroft's much larger in ACD. It's basically summed up that, while he's probably smarter than his brother, he'd never do what Sherlock does because he's the laziest person ever.

Canon Mycroft is the best character ever. Far more interesting than most of the interpretations where he's the superspy head of British Intelligence. Just incredibly smart and hilariously lazy.

(Yes, I'm aware that there's textual justification for speculation about Mycroft's role in the British government, I just think it's an element of his character that's usually overblown)

Disagree. I LOVE "M" Mycroft.
