eh, there are plenty of people that jump to call various females in media fat. I'd guess that the actor himself would be more likely to get a role than a woman his size (and age).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
not that it's okay to do any of that, of course. but hey, it's TV. part of it is blatant objectification, but part of it is that we'd rather watch pretty/ideal versions of ourselves.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
yep that dude gets it easy compared to his female counterparts. There's no chubbs Irene Adlers.

I don't get the fat jokes meme. I see them every so often on tumblr. But where is the origin from?

If you're talking about the character Mycroft (rather than Mark Gatiss himself) which I assume you are, the fat jokes are because Mycroft is specifically described as being overweight in the books, and Mark Gatiss was very aware that he himself isn't overweight. Which is why they put all the yo-yo dieter stuff and jokes about his weight in the show, to make up for Mark Gatiss's Mycroft clearly not looking overweight, and try and keep the character closer to how he was originally written.

Not saying its right or wrong, but the source material was all over Mycroft's portliness. So, at least it's not out of left field.

Fat jokes about Mycroft or fat jokes about Gatiss? Because there's a reason for Mycroft-fat-jokes....

I don't think it's ever cool to joke about someone's weight, no matter the gender. It's just so shallow and rude to me. I know Sherlock has mentioned Mycroft's weight in the show so I understand it being mentioned in fic for that reason, but all the fat jokes about him in fandom confuse me too.

Then again, I must be seeing something very different from everyone else, because he doesn't even look that heavy to me.

So I do a lot of scrolling. And blocking on tumblr. Which, you know, is not a tremendous hardship. But it'd be nice to not have to miss out on the other stuff those users post.

So, apparently it's an in-joke about canon material and no, women are judged more harshly for being fat than men. Double fail.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If Mycroft were a woman, the tone of the fat jokes would be viler and more demeaning. Have you seen what the media says about women like Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera?

The thing is, when you take a role as someone who is very definitely overweight in one format, and described as such as part of the character, when it's not as much of an issue in another incarnation such jokes are pretty much inevitable. It has less to do with Sherlock!Mycroft and lots to do with ACD!Mycroft.

But... but... it's completely impossible to hurt a man's feelings, don't-cha-know? Especially when it comes to body image. [*insert sarcasm here*]

In ACD's books, Mycroft was very lazy, rigid in his routines, and enormously fat. So the meme didn't just spring up out of no where and it's actually a lot less personal than it seems.

Even though canon Sherlock does make a few cutting remarks, the fact is that anyone who isn't blind can tell that Gatiss isn't fat. As an insult it works, but as a narrative it just seems bizarre and stupid and needlessly mean spirited.

So, tl;dr, I agree, it's an old joke that's gone well past it's funny point and should be retired.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Women are judged more harshly for being fact.

Mother nature has engineered women to have a layer of fat.

Not ever going to feel bad about any dude being judged maybe 1/2 as harshly as a woman in the same range.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
He's fat?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
If he were a woman he wouldn't even have this role because in addition to having a little belly he's also "old" and "ugly" :P

It's been a while since I've been in fandom, but isn't the joke that he isn't fat but he yo-yo diets anyway? And isn't it usually just Sherlock mocking him for the diets, rather than his weight?

I don't understand how he's considered fat. He's got a little extra around the belly, but he doesn't seem fat to me.
