In ACD's books, Mycroft was very lazy, rigid in his routines, and enormously fat. So the meme didn't just spring up out of no where and it's actually a lot less personal than it seems.

Even though canon Sherlock does make a few cutting remarks, the fact is that anyone who isn't blind can tell that Gatiss isn't fat. As an insult it works, but as a narrative it just seems bizarre and stupid and needlessly mean spirited.

So, tl;dr, I agree, it's an old joke that's gone well past it's funny point and should be retired.
