I don't think it's ever cool to joke about someone's weight, no matter the gender. It's just so shallow and rude to me. I know Sherlock has mentioned Mycroft's weight in the show so I understand it being mentioned in fic for that reason, but all the fat jokes about him in fandom confuse me too.

Then again, I must be seeing something very different from everyone else, because he doesn't even look that heavy to me.

Pretty sure it's a reference that Mycroft was repeatedly described as overweight, portly, etc. in the series and the actor is clearly anything but.

If it's that, then that's a bit better, though I still don't like it (Call me a buzz-kill if you must); I never thought of it that way though. Maybe this is one of those things that flew right over my head, but tbh the way some people go on and on about it makes me side-eye them.

Also, with the way some people in fandom are now (I.E. "I FUCKING HATE YOUR FACE YOU PIECE OF SHIT", and that's about someone they like) it can be hard to tell what's a joke and what isn't.

If fat jokes are the only thing you find offensive about ACD, you're a fucked up person, so good for you.

Did I ever say that? This is a secret about Mycroft's weight in particular, which is why I'm talking about it. I wasn't aware that I had to make a list of every single thing that could be offensive about ACD's writing. (Which I'm not very familiar with in the first place, btw; I'm talking about the show.)

Oh puhlease.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, let's just ignore that it was written 100+ years ago and condemn it out of hand to make ourselves feel 'enlightened'.

Now fuck off.

IA, fat shaming is harmful. Like... is it really necessary to carry forward that kind of material from the source text? Does Mycroft's being heavy seriously influence his character that much?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
They brought forward the racism, so why not?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Except, The Blind Banker wasn't actually based on the ACD canon (besides token references). Mind you, the same could be said for all the subsequent episodes......

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
No, but the racism towards any non-English character is.

I don't know the source material well, so I'm not sure about that. I can't see why it would be that important, but I can see why it was put in (to stay consistent with the source material).

The fact that fandom doesn't let up on it is a bit unnecessary though imo. Even if they're joking about the fact that Mycroft is supposed to be fat and Gatiss isn't, it doesn't sit right with me.

I don't know the source material either, although other comments have indicated that Mycroft is overweight. Given the other problematic aspects of BBC Sherlock, it's not surprising that fat-shaming was par for the course. :-(

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's important to people who latched onto Mycroft as the first time they'd ever found a character who was fat like them, but also awesome and kickass.

Not just fat, but fat and lazy and completely in control and satisfied with his life.

...of course I would have preferred they carry it forward by, I dunno, *casting someone fat* as Mycroft, instead of just making fat jokes about him.

But if there's one thing BBC Sherlock has taught us, it's you just can't be as tolerant and open-minded about different sorts of people on a 21st century TV show as you could in the 1890s.

[identity profile] spicandspan89.livejournal.com 2012-09-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah if it was that important, I would have preferred that they cast someone who is heavy. I agree with you, there needs to be more positive fat role models. And by that I mean awesome role models who happen to be fat.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure Mycroft is fat because he's lazy as hell. They're kind of tied together for him.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
In before person you replied to chimes in with "but, but, NO-one who is fat is fat because they're lazy, HDU"...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
So if someone sits on their butt all day, doing nothing of consequence, compulsively eating pounds of terribly unhealthy things...that's being a positive role model?

Some people are fat due to genetics. Other people are fat because they lead unhealthy lifestyles, and they develop a host of completely unnecessary and avoidable health problems as a result. The latter should not be encouraged just to avoid "fat-shaming."

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There is something really different between encouraging "unhealthy lifestyles" (which, for fuck's sake, can mean being a runner in certain situations) and allowing that fat people, for whatever reasons cause their fatness, can be brilliant, witty, engaging characters. Being fat does not have to equal being dull, and having interesting characters who are fat is not encouraging fatness anymore than having interesting characters who are axe murderers are encouraging being an axe murderer. Or are you worried that Dexter is a bad role model and we oughtn't glorify him on screen, too, because what if people think it's okay to kill people?
