Pretear. Oh man, Pretear. It's one of my favorite shows, I know a lot of things about it, but it's really pretty mediocre. It just hits a lot of things I like--a fairytale "retelling" (even though it doesn't do much with that bit), melodrama, love triangles EVERYWHERE, pretty dresses, reverse harem, a pretty male character with glasses that acts cheerful and like a flirt but is actually severely angsty and pining after someone that he can't have (and he's voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese dub and Chris Patton in the English, so he has an attractive voice to me in either version, sob), an apocalyptic finale where everything ends up okay anyway. ("Oh no he's dead...NOPE HE GOT BETTER.")

I mean, it's...it's really a pretty weak show. The characters aren't developed well for the most part, those that are tend to be cliche, it has WAY too many comedic relief that aren't used well, the dub has a lot of voice actors I like but the writing is fairly weak (not like the original was great but the dub's script is just AWKWARD and it shows)...I don't know, I could go on and on about the issues the series has.

And that's just the anime. The manga fixes some of the problems of the anime but it has it's own heaping pile of problems, too (awkward art, fleshes out the villain but makes her unbearably annoying, etc). Either version makes me bash my head against the wall because of how much lost potential is there.

...BUT SASAME.

Wait, Sasame's Chris Patton? Guess it's time to watch the dub now.

Yep! Himeno's also Luci Christian, if you like her, too.

I think Chris does a great job as Sasame, even if I think the script for the dub is awkward. I think I remember him saying at a panel that he thinks Sasame is one of the characters he's most like that he's played, too, although that was a few years ago so he might feel differently now.

I LOVE Pretear. I have the series burned to DVDs I carefully labeled with the episode titles and the pret Himeno used in each one and a list of the weapons she uses in each.

It's just like...basically THE shoujo anime to me, for whatever reason, and sometimes I just like to watch sparkly things and it's so very good at that. I always feel so ridiculously bad for Mawata the whole time, too.

It's definitely one of the shoujo-yest of shoujos, though! I've heard people say that Princess Tutu is like "the girliest anime ever" but anyone who thinks that hasn't seen Pretear.

I feel bad for Mawata, too--I was embarrassingly like her as a teenager (minus the good reason to be angsty, both of my parents are living and they're still together) so sometimes I cringe a little during her scenes, but I can understand it a lot. She really feels like an actual teen girl. ...Minus the whole...magical...manipulation bits.

Oh Pretear. I like the opening to the anime. Also...lol, the fact that the dark Pretear was the damn maid the entire time and no one noticed. Way to go leafay knights!

The opening is awesome. Not even a guilty pleasure there, great song.

To be fair I think the only Knights she's on screen with until the big reveal is the younger ones, who wouldn't know who she is because of them lacking memories of their past lives. You'd still think one of the older knights would since a "disturbance in ~~the Force~~ Leafe" though.

Particularly Sasame, considering his ability to HEAR EVERYTHING ANYWHERE. You never heard the voice of the woman you loved in the mansion you spend a ton of time at? NEVER? EVER???

I've always considered Pretear one of the better-quality magical girl anime of its time... YMMV, I guess.

Well like I said, I don't think it's horrible, just mediocre (and obviously I still think it's enjoyable, like I said, it's one of my favorite shows!) But I'm not sure if it'd be too hard to be one of the best magical girl shows of that era--wasn't that right in the middle of the big glut of magical girl shows that came out and saturated the market?

...It doesn't help that I compare it to Princess Tutu a lot, though. Most magical girl shows would seem weak in comparison.

Oh my gawd. My roommates in college and I watched this show and loved it. I still have the theme song in my iTunes and play it when we get together.

Wow, more people know and love this series than I thought! It's kind of good to see I'm not the only one.

Also I just realized that this says MOVIES. Oops.

I don't think it's mediocre, considering the genre. I think it's up there with Magical Knight Rayearth. :D

Hey now, there's some magical girl series that top Pretear, easily. Although maybe it's unfair of me to expect every magical girl show to be Princess Tutu, or something.

Also I'm watching Rayearth right now and I think it's better! It actually takes the time to develop the characters a little more, you know? (...But I still like Pretear a bit better so far because...pretty dresses...and Sasame...)
