Guilty Pleasure Movies

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-09-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So I was at a clearance sale at my university's bookstore and I was flipping through the movies and lo and behold I stumbled upon. . .

17 Again

For the unacquainted, 17 Again is a movie starring Zac Efron where the whole point of the movie is for him to be very attractive. Oh and also it has a plot or something where he used to be like 35 and now he's aged down and he wants to save his failing marriage but he's a high school student now and yadda yadda but mainly the movie is about how delicious he is.

I bought that movie for the apartment as soon as I saw it.

What are your guilty pleasure movies f!S?

Pretty Woman, Earth Girls are Easy (which is actually surprisingly feminist - I mean when was the last time you saw a woman causally taking bc pills and still be considering the 'good girl' by the narrative), Romancing the Stone, and Super Mario Bros are my big ones.

Pretear. Oh man, Pretear. It's one of my favorite shows, I know a lot of things about it, but it's really pretty mediocre. It just hits a lot of things I like--a fairytale "retelling" (even though it doesn't do much with that bit), melodrama, love triangles EVERYWHERE, pretty dresses, reverse harem, a pretty male character with glasses that acts cheerful and like a flirt but is actually severely angsty and pining after someone that he can't have (and he's voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese dub and Chris Patton in the English, so he has an attractive voice to me in either version, sob), an apocalyptic finale where everything ends up okay anyway. ("Oh no he's dead...NOPE HE GOT BETTER.")

I mean, it's...it's really a pretty weak show. The characters aren't developed well for the most part, those that are tend to be cliche, it has WAY too many comedic relief that aren't used well, the dub has a lot of voice actors I like but the writing is fairly weak (not like the original was great but the dub's script is just AWKWARD and it shows)...I don't know, I could go on and on about the issues the series has.

And that's just the anime. The manga fixes some of the problems of the anime but it has it's own heaping pile of problems, too (awkward art, fleshes out the villain but makes her unbearably annoying, etc). Either version makes me bash my head against the wall because of how much lost potential is there.

...BUT SASAME.

I've never seen 17 Again.

Um, my guilty pleasure is Meet the Robinsons. It always makes me so happy when I watch it. I know the time travel doesn't make sense in that movie but I can't bring myself to care.

Oddly, Jackass, because I would be mortified for people to know I find it funny.

As far as movies I will watch, no matter when I catch them on, well, that would be the Fifth Element, Leon, and Wings of Desire. Always a happy moment.

I would say Mean Girls but that movie is legit brilliant.

Pokemon 2000 (the second movie, the one with Lugia) is one of my favourite movies, though. I know it's absolutely the most cliché Chosen One plot ever which is exactly the opposite of what it was in the original version, but I still love it.

The Santa Clause. It's cheesy as hell, but I still enjoy it as a Christmas movie (Not the sequels) Same with the live action Grinch. :X

Little Monsters. I still get choked up at the end.

I think I love nearly every movie that's been mentioned here. Except for the ones I haven't seen.

I think one that I have the hardest time finding people to agree with me on is Waterworld. I like it. I genuinely like it and I'm pretty sure it's considered one of the worst movies of all time (which, seriously people who make those lists, there are a lot of bad movies and you pick this?).

It's often described as a guilty pleasure, so Con Air. But really I feel ZERO guilt about my Con Air love. And no, I'm not a Homestuck fan at all. I just appreciate the campy goodness of some of the greatest character actors in a generation all being ridiculous together.

The Fast and the Furious movies, The Matrix movies (okay, so the first is generally thought to be amazing, but everyone else hates the others), and Zoolander.

Actually, I'm not that guilty about the Fast movies OR Zoolander, but people really tend to think you have shit taste if you like the second or third Matrix movies, so I don't often mention them. *shrugs*

A Knight's Tale & Mulan

[personal profile] gethenian 2012-09-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
A Knight's Tale.

....yeah, I admit it, I love everything about this movie. It's cheesy, it's completely historically inaccurate, it's essentially nothing more than blatant fanservice for teenage females done in a style that feels like the 90's even though it was released in 2001. It makes no excuses for what it is, and what it IS is pandering to people whose knowledge of the middle ages comes entirely from having been to a Renaissance Festival ever in their lives.

And it's fucking awesome and just totally lifts my mood and makes me laugh every time I see it. Mainly because of Paul Bettany but I feel like all of the main character actors gave good, entertaining performances, even though they were hammy as a pork processing plant. It just WORKS for me.

Also--

Mulan - Completely rapes history and disrespects legit Chinese culture, especially by inserting Eddie Murphy into it, but as a genderqueer drag king, I can't help falling for Disney's cheap, low-blow, punch-to-the-gut EFFECTIVE emotional manipulation, especially when she does that song about her reflection. sdkjfhbvsdjkfghbvsdfg fuck you disney stop being able to make me cry. >:| And then I feel guilty for liking and relating to it because I'm a descendent of Italian farmers, Russian bootleggers, and Czech/Romanian gypsies, I know pretty much exactly shit-all about Chinese history or culture, and I don't even like Chinese food. Mulan shouldn't be MY princess. But there's this stupid little kid inside me that sees her and goes "....someone kind of gets me. I HAVE A ROLE MODEL!"
