Re: Stupid ideas about attractiveness
(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)I think, first of all, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I mean this, not simply in terms of physical beauty, but in an absolute way: beauty is an inherently subjective thing. In any and all cases, a judgment that I make about what is beautiful is one that I am making for myself (in contradistinction to truth and goodness). Indeed, it is one that I cannot imagine being any other way: my standards of beauty are so far my own that any other person's standards of beauty which disagree with mine are incomprehensible to me. All aesthetics - that is, all that is purely aesthetic - is personal. So this clearly transfers across to physical beauty as well, and it is in fact played out in real life: different people have different tastes. One person hates beards, another enjoys them. One person likes red hair, another likes black. This kind of preference is unjustifiable and inarguable, in the same way that my liking or not liking the taste of something is fundamentally inarguable. You can bring whatever evo-psych bullshit arguments you want; the fact is, our sense of beauty is personal and not generalizable.
Now, as to the source of your anger at people disagreeing with your judgment of beauty (that's what really seems to be making you angry - the disagreement - the people who are not considered ugly who you think are ugly, and the people who refuse to consider them angry) - I really could not venture to speculate. Your spite and bitter asperity towards "morons" with "ugly bodies" and "freaks" who like ugly people, I cannot comprehend. I can understand, intellectually, the arguments that you're making (although I disagree with them). But I really can't grasp the roots of your emotional response to this. To sum up: why u mad bro
