Stupid ideas about attractiveness

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting sick of this idea that anyone and everyone is attractive or that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." No, it's not, but apparently no one is allowed to say that anymore. Look at how vicious the reactions are on this comm to "trolls" who dare to call anyone in a secret ugly. But aside from a few freaks with fat fetishes and other weird preferences (and you ARE "freaks" in the sense that you are not the norm) and the "everyone is equal" losers, most people would find those people ugly. The "trolls" are just saying what everyone else is thinking.

Try actually reading something before chewing someone out for stating the obvious. This is one place to start as far as the idea that any woman is beautiful that morons like Lady Gaga are trying to spread around posting their photos of their ugly bodies. Sorry, everyone who sees that shit is just going to know you're not taking care of your body.

Except there IS a troll that goes around calling everyone ugly no matter who they are and it's obvious from their writing style that it's the same person commenting on every secret.

Nice try tho.

Are you sure you don't have a freakish and abnormal skinny-fetish?

Kinda weak troll. You spent too much time with those posts you made (and just referenced, which was a point right there) for it to not be obvious it's you. Maybe if you'd started with this... but you didn't.

Too obvious. At least try to be subtle! Foaming at the mouth with cries of "UGLY PEOPLE EXIST!" is bad form and too blatant a misunderstanding of... everything. Life, people, the Internet, this comm. I'm tempted to edit your post and show you more effective means of trolling, but eh. Nice try, but you need some work.

Attractiveness really is subjective to some degree. I mean, yeah, there's some scientifically proven stuff like...people are attracted to symmetry, but there's people I find attractive that others would disagree on, and people I don't find attractive that a ton of people think are good looking.

I mean, people never agree on anything unanimously. Some people will hate Citizen Kane, some people will love Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Why wouldn't attractiveness be the same way?

"Work like a man, but dress like a woman."

Well, I would, except oh wait OSHA forbids me from wearing heels and a tight little miniskirt in the lab because I might spill corrosive acid or pathogenic bacteria on myself and die. Fuck you very much.

Plus, yeah, objectively there's a 'beauty standard' of people we can objectively find beautiful, but I see plenty of 'ugly' and 'fat' people in long, happy marriages with healthy loving families and good careers, and I see plenty of 'beautiful' and 'thin' people go through strings of failed relationships and careers, so really beauty doesn't mean much.

I mean, if judging people based on their appearance gets you off because you're insecure and you have nothing better to do then more power to you, but don't expect this post is just going to automatically change everyone's minds about beauty standards. The whole thing about beauty standards is that they're unrealistic and unimportant in the long run, and campaigns like 'post your body, it is beautiful' is not a thing where objectifying your body is the message. The message of it is that there are other people out there that look like you and that you are normal, not a hideous monster, and don't be so hard on yourself because it's not important anyway.

Edit: Reading through more of that blog I just have to say: that poor sick soul. Jesus Christ, whatever happened to him to make him hate women so much?

assuming you are not a troll, calling someone a freak straight out generally will not endear them to the point you are trying to make. assuming you are a troll, you might want to read up on a quality called "subtlety," because you are rather lacking in that department.

Re: Stupid ideas about attractiveness

What really strikes me here is your vindictiveness and your anger towards people who aren't attractive, and towards people who disagree with your standards of taste. There's this extraordinarily bitter resentment of these people and a desire to shame them. It's really kind of astonishing.

I think, first of all, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I mean this, not simply in terms of physical beauty, but in an absolute way: beauty is an inherently subjective thing. In any and all cases, a judgment that I make about what is beautiful is one that I am making for myself (in contradistinction to truth and goodness). Indeed, it is one that I cannot imagine being any other way: my standards of beauty are so far my own that any other person's standards of beauty which disagree with mine are incomprehensible to me. All aesthetics - that is, all that is purely aesthetic - is personal. So this clearly transfers across to physical beauty as well, and it is in fact played out in real life: different people have different tastes. One person hates beards, another enjoys them. One person likes red hair, another likes black. This kind of preference is unjustifiable and inarguable, in the same way that my liking or not liking the taste of something is fundamentally inarguable. You can bring whatever evo-psych bullshit arguments you want; the fact is, our sense of beauty is personal and not generalizable.

Now, as to the source of your anger at people disagreeing with your judgment of beauty (that's what really seems to be making you angry - the disagreement - the people who are not considered ugly who you think are ugly, and the people who refuse to consider them angry) - I really could not venture to speculate. Your spite and bitter asperity towards "morons" with "ugly bodies" and "freaks" who like ugly people, I cannot comprehend. I can understand, intellectually, the arguments that you're making (although I disagree with them). But I really can't grasp the roots of your emotional response to this. To sum up: why u mad bro

Either http://heartiste.wordpress.com/ is a masterpiece of trolling or they're the most deluded person in history. "I found this old page from the 1800s that talks about beauty! Everyone must conform to it immediately!" Not to mention that the "historical" Q and A is laughably wrong.

I'm imagining this 300 pound person, stinking of sweat and misery, meticulously measuring every woman in the past 50 years' worth of Playboy magazines. They find no joy in this, but they might make someone on the Internet feel bad.

Most people don't look like supermodels, yet most people eventually have at least one romantic and/or sexual partner in their lives. A great many get married. So while super attractive people generally have an edge when it comes to being noticed, it's obviously quite possible for a large percentage of people to be attracted to people who aren't "perfect."

The media, however, often creates heightened expectations that don't match how people look in reality. For one thing, people on TV have the benefit of professional stylists who maximize their attributes.

In any case, you're either a troll, or you're being a jerk. There's no need to take the time to declare someone objectively ugly. Just because you're thinking something does not mean that voicing it will add something to the conversation. And there's certainly no need to judge people for having unique preferences, as everyone has subjective things that they find attractive.

Go look up how beauty standards have changed over the course of history because the "skinny girls are the most beautiful thing"-idea that you clutching hasn't been the norm for that long.

Why the double standard? Are there dimensions of a perfect man? If a man does not fit these dimensions is he objectively ugly? If so, then we automatically need to tell him this, you know, for his own good.

Give me a fucking break.
