(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)Would it be fine for me to cosplay her? If I naturally tanned my skin--not spray tan or anything like that, just going to a tanning booth or letting myself tan naturally in the sun--would that be OK? Or should I avoid that and just be super-pale?
Also, if I wanted to cosplay a black character--say, Zoe from Firefly--would that be seen as bad, or would that be OK? On one hand, I'm a big believer of "skin color doesn't matter in cosplay, just the craft and effort involved and a love of the character", but on the other hand I know that as a white person I have a lot more characters available that I would resemble more, so it feels a little "unfair" to choose a black character to cosplay.
I know I'm probably being ridiculously cautious over this, but I'm afraid of stepping on toes.

And it's okay to cosplay characters of color, but like you said you're a white person choosing from a small pool of brown-skinned characters and some people might not appreciate it so keep that in mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)How the hell is anybody going to prove that they tanned just for the cosplay, and not because at the time they happened to want to be tan?
People have been tanning since forever.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 06:19 am (UTC)(link)If your cosplay is good, people will like it. If people give you shit for your skin color, well, that's their problem. You cosplaying a character is not preventing anyone else from cosplaying the same one.
also im pretty sure not many people really notice the difference in Raetsel's skintone compared to every other Princess Tutu character so I don't think it's something you needed to be worried about in the first place.
