OT, but something I've been wondering: I'm white and super pale, but I'd really like to cosplay a character with tan skin. (Her race is unclear in the show, but she seems to be from Germany, so she might technically be white/Caucasian, but she also has a close friend/little brother with an Arabic name and a really similar coloration, so it's unclear. She looks like this: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120411023639/princesstutu/images/a/a7/Raetsel.jpg)

Would it be fine for me to cosplay her? If I naturally tanned my skin--not spray tan or anything like that, just going to a tanning booth or letting myself tan naturally in the sun--would that be OK? Or should I avoid that and just be super-pale?

Also, if I wanted to cosplay a black character--say, Zoe from Firefly--would that be seen as bad, or would that be OK? On one hand, I'm a big believer of "skin color doesn't matter in cosplay, just the craft and effort involved and a love of the character", but on the other hand I know that as a white person I have a lot more characters available that I would resemble more, so it feels a little "unfair" to choose a black character to cosplay.

I know I'm probably being ridiculously cautious over this, but I'm afraid of stepping on toes.

From anti-whitewashing blogs I've gone to, the general consensus is to not alter your skin for a cosplay in any way, even going to the tanning booth.

And it's okay to cosplay characters of color, but like you said you're a white person choosing from a small pool of brown-skinned characters and some people might not appreciate it so keep that in mind.

Yeah, I'm expecting some people might not like it for whatever reason, but I'm going to try to do the best I can to be respectful. I'll just cosplay Raetsel as-is, then, and I'll probably skip Zoey and maybe do River instead--I like Zoey better but I like River fine, too, and I've been told that when I lose some weight (working on it now) I'd look sort of like her.

Thanks for the advice!

Honest question:
How the hell is anybody going to prove that they tanned just for the cosplay, and not because at the time they happened to want to be tan?
People have been tanning since forever.

just cosplay them with your natural skin color. do not tan. Do not fucking tan, or try to alter your skin color in any way. There's basically no way that isn't going to be skeevy at the very least.

If your cosplay is good, people will like it. If people give you shit for your skin color, well, that's their problem. You cosplaying a character is not preventing anyone else from cosplaying the same one.

also im pretty sure not many people really notice the difference in Raetsel's skintone compared to every other Princess Tutu character so I don't think it's something you needed to be worried about in the first place.

haha, I've seen people debate about Raetsel's race before but I think the Tutu fans I know are a particularly obsessive and analytical bunch. Thanks, I won't tan and I'll just do the best I can to make the cosplay look good.

I do not fucking get this 'do not tan' thing. Newsflash: if a white person goes out in the sun and their skin gets darker that is their natural fucking skin colour. There is no way anyone can look at a cosplayer and figure out if they're tanned because they specifically went out tanning for the cosplay, or if they just spend a lot of time on the beach... and frankly, it shouldn't fucking matter. It's part of a white person's natural skin tone to tan darker, not bloody racist!

Or is my dad racist new because he's of Eastern European descent and tans really dark in the summer from spending time outside?
