Probably. Though why exactly would you need help finding out about characters? And why would anybody know your race to begin with if you just run the blog and don't participate?

This secret is confusing more then anything.

But yeah, you already figured out some aspects of the internet. Just train your google fu.

In the first post I declared my race in a friendly little disclaimer, partly in case I picked up a few followers and then somebody found out I was white and got upset or something. I just didn't want there to be a chance for that to be A Thing. The reasoning behind the blog is: a good friend of mine is a panelist for a major black otaku panel at a big Canadian con, so I was lurking around her FB group and I could see people trading information on black anime characters all the time. Just seemed like something people were looking for - so now I do these little daily write-ups with a few screenshots, tagged by gender and stuff. It's meant to be somewhat celebratory, and draw attention to lesser-known characters and anime, and I'm hoping to build it into this really useful sort of lookup thing for anybody with darker skin who wants to play a character with a similar skintone.

You may have guessed that I'm the anon from a few months ago who caused a bit of a shitstorm with her post about selfishly wishing blackface wasn't a thing, so that I could cosplay any character with impunity and the greatest accuracy I could physically hope to achieve. I get to research all sorts of interesting characters for this tumblr. :)

As someone in the cosplay circuit, it's not at all uncommon to see people asking for recommendations of darker-skinned characters to cosplay who aren't the same ones that are done over and over again (Anthy, Storm, Katara, etc.). I can see why a central source for something like that could be a useful resource for POC cosplayers who would like to cosplay a character with a similar skintone to theirs.

From context, the first has no stated race (but I would surmise African ancestry), the second is Catalan, and the third has implied Indian ancestry. In all three cases giving them particularly racial features would be quite a departure from the overall style of the show. Not that there aren't plenty of anime out there which do manage that kind of thing, and do it well (Naoki Urasawa, rawr) but cartoonish, averaged-out features like these don't really take away from the fact that the characters are definitely intended to be non-white, in my opinion.

That said, why would they even know you're white? Unless you've posted somewhere on that blog, or on your personal blog [and provided there's a link between the two], there's no real reason they would know that.

NGL, I'm a little embarrassed for you. I know you mean well, but what you're doing feels kind of patronizing.

Maybe you should get rid of your disclaimer and disassociate your Tumblr ID from anything that would identify you as one race or another?

Idk. Maintaining the artificial pretense of a raceless internet feels somewhat less icky than the idea of a white person helping POC do things they're already doing (like being involved in the communities you messaged), especially when the subject is anime and fantasy races.

Maybe? Are you telling them you're white for some reason? I mean, from what I've seen the only time PoC on tumblr have gotten mad over that kind of stuff is when it becomes fetishizing or some sort of brownie points project, so if you're emphasizing that you're white for w/e reason it might rub them the wrong way.

Or they could be busy, or maybe you didn't read the FAQ where they mention how they deal w/ promos so they ignored you.

Considering the OP's grammar skills in the comments, it may not be race that's holding them back.

Paragraph breaks are a very useful thing.

And in all honesty OP, you are a white person who is literally making a list of characters for people to cosplay based purely on their skin tone. Perhaps you come off better in your tumblr, but my instinctive reaction is fuck you, asshat, let people choose whoever the fuck they want to cosplay. It is fucking cosplay. You do not have to look like the character to dress up as them.

...fuck it, lets put it into "how would you feel" terms. Since the vast majority of anime characters are Japanese, let's make a list of the canonically Caucasian ones that you could 'successfully' cosplay as. Short list? Okay, so now are ANY of your favorite characters on that list? No? Too bad. You get to be a French chef from Ranma 1/2.

A POC Character tumblr? A-okay!

List of characters for non-Caucasian people to dress up as? Not okay because it implies that they can't just choose their favorite character and say fuck skin color. The statement of "If you could take a picture of yourself and give me the HTML code for your skin tone, I can search the database to find the closest match." is a really, really terrible one.

OT, but something I've been wondering: I'm white and super pale, but I'd really like to cosplay a character with tan skin. (Her race is unclear in the show, but she seems to be from Germany, so she might technically be white/Caucasian, but she also has a close friend/little brother with an Arabic name and a really similar coloration, so it's unclear. Would it be fine for me to cosplay her? If I naturally tanned my skin--not spray tan or anything like that, just going to a tanning booth or letting myself tan naturally in the sun--would that be OK? Or should I avoid that and just be super-pale?

Also, if I wanted to cosplay a black character--say, Zoe from Firefly--would that be seen as bad, or would that be OK? On one hand, I'm a big believer of "skin color doesn't matter in cosplay, just the craft and effort involved and a love of the character", but on the other hand I know that as a white person I have a lot more characters available that I would resemble more, so it feels a little "unfair" to choose a black character to cosplay.

I know I'm probably being ridiculously cautious over this, but I'm afraid of stepping on toes.

I can see why. There's something awkward about a white person making a blog of those characters to cosplay as an alternative to white characters. It gives an uncomfortable implication that POC shouldn't/don't need to cosplay whites because here's a blog listing alternatives.

You should of just stopped at making a blog of POC characters rather than specifying it was for POC to cosplay with.
