But yeah, Princess Bubblegum is pretty rockin'.
I saw an article the other day talking about the girls=princesses in cartoons and lack of good role models for young girls and they used Princess Bubblegum as an example of that. I was so annoyed because obviously they never took the time to watch the show. Thankfully there were a lot of comments in support of PB and her awesomeness as a role model.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)how can anyone overlook that aspect?

But Bubblegum is actually shown leading and taking care of the candy people. So being a princess is actually a position of power for her.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)People shouldn't be allowed to analyze pop culture like that unless they actually are familiar with the media source.
I once read an article about how it's problematic to present sexy-pouty women in skimpy outfits and with no depth as empowering female role models just because they sling guns and yell at people. This is a trope I hate with a passion so I was really excited when I started reading. Problem was, they used Firefly - and specifically River of all people - as their main example. Serenity had just come out and the author clearly had never seen Firefly or Serenity as the only specifics they could give about why the movie was problematic for this reason was how River looked on the poster.

Yeah I was all over the article because I enjoy talking about feminism and problematic representations of women, particularly in children's media, but it was so disappointing. It was basically "anything with the title of Princess is obviously sexist and evil!" without actually looking at the source or, you know, characterization.
With so many problematic characters and sources out there it's just complete fail when people pull stuff like this.

I mean if you wanted to talk about problems on that show I'd point to one of the last episodes where they had the black bounty hunter walking around the ship going "i'm gonna rape you".

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 01:42 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, it's not that you can't find anything problematic in Firefly, it's that it wasn't a good example of the issue the article was talking about. The movie poster is pretty much the only time River ever looks all sexified, so while she arguably lacked development, she didn't fit into the eye-candy bombshell "Strong Female Character" box that the article was railing against. It was very frustrating to see a position I agree with argued for very poorly with a show I liked being attacked for all the wrong reasons.

Like, why are most of girls ALSO be princesses, when male characters can just be themselves?
Full disclosure: I fucking love Adventure Time. It just causes me to raise my eyebrows occasionally.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)I seem to remember one episode where Finn said something along the lines of "don't flaunt it if you aren't going to give it up". Rape culture in my Adventure Time? Do not want.
