Also the last couple seasons are pretty good, I caught up on them a while ago.

SPOILERS for Red vs Blue Season 9 + 10
A few details:
-Tex and Carolina had this little one-sided rivalry going on after the Freelancers found out about Tex. Carolina was determined to be the best but Tex didn't really care about her more than the others.
-The AI are a really, really big deal to all of them. The reason South turned into a traitor was partially due to Carolina deciding she wanted the AIs South and Wash were originally supposed to get.
-Sigma, Maine's AI, is the one responsible for the whole Meta ordeal. He's one of the main villains of season 10. Or at least, building up to it.
-It wasn't CT that Epsilon killed while in the Monitor with the laser, it was the rebel leader of the group the Freelancers were fighting who received her armor when she died after defecting.
-In the present time segments, Epsilon is totes being a traitor and warming up to Carolina. Well. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on, but it will probably be revealed in the past segments.
If you are going to get back into it, now's a good time, as Epsilon being implanted into Wash is going to happen really shortly in the Past segments. Last episode had Alpha's torture; apparently Sigma, Gamma, and Omega helped with it too. They split the Alpha using an Engineer, too.
A lot doesn't make sense out of context. However, there are some kickin rad action scenes, and North and York are the best people ever.

I did watch the first few episodes of season 9 when they first started putting it out, and I know there was a part of it with the original cast back at the bases...is that going anywhere or is it all about the Freelancers? (Which I don't mind, I like the Freelancers, and I like having more females.) And um, is it still humorous at all? It sounds so serious.

There's still present segments, yes, plenty of them. And yep, it's still funny. (Donut's not dead!) The overall tone is closer to Reconstruction than BGC. There's funny parts in the Freelancer segments as well! They're just darker.
And if nothing else, the AI in season ten are fantastic. Theta is about the most adorable thing ever.
