Wow, a The Stand secret!

I say fuck Nadine. What about Larry's partner? Wa he supposed to cheat ob her for someone who has far as he knew had just been teasing him?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

I kind of agree.

I agree with the OP about Joe, but for once, Larry was trying--and succeeding--in being a good guy. She had turned him down several times, and he'd moved on. Not to mention it's kind of a shit thing to take advantage of a clearly distraught and freaked-out person, which Nadine was at the time.

Is this actually a comic about Stephen Kings The last Stand? If yes, I'M goint to be that hipster and say:"Go read the goddam book!"

Sorry, had to get that out, book is one of my favourites. Now, carry on and have fun with your comic!

OP

I read the book long before the comic series was released, I just used the images from the comic to illustrate my secret.

I felt more bad for Harold.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Why? He was pretty much a prick. Yeah, he got picked on alot but that's no reason for his crappy attitude and actions.

Not being a jerk, just genuinely curious. Maybe I missed something or wasn't reading too in-depth.

Because, in the end, he realized he was wrong. He had a chip on his shoulder, yes, and he felt he was being slighted, and he raged about uh...whatshername not loving him, but he also began to realize that he wasn't actually being made fun of, that people did respect and like him, and he'd probably have abandoned the whole idea of going to Flagg if not for Nadine.

Not saying he was a 'good guy', but if she'd never shown up that day after Larry rejected her, i really do think Harold would have come around. She wasn't evil or anything, just screwed in the head, but i always felt like she pushed him over an edge he was trying to back away from.

Harold was always just this side of "evil", he used to have "pleasant" dreams of Flagg, he knew it was wrong and was conflicted in a way. His shitty childhood and his love/obsession with Frannie made it that much easier for Flagg (via Nadine) to manipulate him. But I still think he would have high tailed it west with or without Nadine. He only stuck around because of his misguided feelings for Frannie.

Aw yes, a Stephen King secret~

Anyway, I definitely see where you're coming from, but I always thought the whole point of Nadine's tragedy is that she has plenty of opportunities to get off the doomed path she's on, and just pointedly ignores them. She starts cutting herself off from Leo because she's jealous of his closeness with Lucy and Larry and thinks he doesn't need her anymore, and she purposefully waits until after Larry is already in love with and committed to Lucy before she tries to get him to have sex with her. And when she looks back on her actions, she doesn't even recognized that she's made these mistakes until it's far, far too late.

And honestly, one of my favorite moments in the book is when Larry turns her away and goes back to Lucy. Sleeping with her might have kept Nadine in Boulder, but it would have completely destroyed all the character development Larry had built up over the course of the book.

Absolutely.

Also, for what it's worth, Larry had been going after Nadine, and loved Nadine, and she kept sending him away.

(Unfortunately, LARRY blames himself at some points about it.)

This.

I think she would have still tried going to Larry at that point regardless of whether or not he was available.

Maybe, but in the book Leo says that Nadine waited until Larry loved Lucy too much, specifically because she'd be rejected and be able to blame him for not stopping her from going to Flagg. It was another way of pushing the responsibility of her actions onto someone else.

Granted, that's Leo's interpretation of her thoughts, but he is psychic and probably knew her better than herself at that point.

ITA on the last part. Larry's whole thing was "You ain't no nice guy," it tortured him in a way throughout most of the book. He evolves out of that self hatred with Lucy and Joe/Leo. To have him say yes to Nadine would have been OOC by that point.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nadine seems so lost and predestined that I do feel bad for her. She's been dealing with Flagg in her head since she was a teenager. She never seemed arrogant like Harold did, just desperate.

Oh of course! She's definitely a sympathetic character, and I do think Flagg holds the blame for a good chunk of what she did. But she did have choices, and people who loved her and would have helped her if she had let them. And ultimately, she was the one who decided to cut herself off from them and betray them. Larry, Leo, Lucy, and even Mother Abigail can't be blamed for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
... And I suppose Nadine had no responsibility for her own actions?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not like the personification of evil had been manipulating her for most of her life, or something.
