Yardwork is.....work. Weird, huh?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been in my house for over a year now. It's my first house, and the first time I'm responsible for the outside as well as the inside.

I let the yard go for almost that whole year, as I didn't have a mower or other tools, and couldn't afford them for a while. Then I could and dropped a load of money on a mower/trimmer/rake/etc. By that time the yard was very jungle-esque. Seriously, I had dandelions and some flowery-but-has-burs-all-over weeds as tall as me lining the edges and sprouting in spots all over.

I do a bit at a time, and the front yard isn't too bad, but the back is a nightmare, and my gravel driveway doesn't look like gravel anymore. It's hard to stay motivated to do anything at all, and I'm about ready to throw in the towel and hire a pro to get it in shape. Frankly the only thing holding me back is finances.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

I hate yardwork and always have. If it were up to me I'd totally let my yard go to hell, because I don't give a fuck. If I could, I'd just pave over the whole thing.

It's getting rather late in the year isn't it? I think you could probably get away with doing one or two more mows and saying "fuck it" 'til spring.

I feel you. My favorite part of hot summers is when it kills all the weeds and grass here.

There was a bit of kerfluffle in a local neighborhood where they have a neighborhood association. After her husband died an older lady had his meticulously maintained lawn ripped up, salted, and laid down pebbles.

She just didn't want to spend the money for "that damn lawn" she'd always hated. Everyone else in the neighborhood is upset and whining about how it's an eyesore and a disrespect to his memory or something.

It's all very entertaining to hear at the local library.

Oh about the gravel driveway. Here I just boil up a pot of water (sometimes I throw in kosher salt) and pour it over the weeds. It kills the roots and they take a lot longer to grow back.

It so is. When I moved into my house, my first thought was, "Why are there so many hedges?"

My question now is, "Why did the idiots before me plant so many hedges that grow so fast?"

Mow everything over and weed like crazy.

I keep my lawn on the longer side. The tall grass help cover up the soil and make it harder for weeds to take root. Weed the dandelions right after a fresh rainfall is easier because of loose soil. You want to rip them out by their roots so they won't sprout again.

And yeah, salty water or boiling water on the driveway to kill the weeds.

Good luck!

Word. And I even have plenty of experience planting and trying to grow things. We've been in our house for six years and I am quickly running out of any fucks to give about the outside shit. I feel a little bad for our neighbors, but not bad enough to try and grow a green lawn and weed my flower beds. And we're in Georgia, where it tries to be a tropical clime much of the time. I'm just sick of this shit.

Wow. No way could we get away with a lawn that tall. The city sends you a letter saying 'cut this or we will, and we'll charge you!'

You must live out in the boondocks.

OP

Actually, I live in the middle of the city. I dread getting one of those letters, but I have been working on the super tall stuff and trying to keep what I've gotten clean maintained. Plus I have privacy fencing all around the back. The only way the city would really know is if they sent someone specifically to inspect me.

Ah, lucky, then! If we let ours go for just a couple weeks, we got a letter. A lot to do, i suppose, with having most of our yard right on the street, but it was still frustrating.

Sometimes, other things have to come first!

Good luck with it - it might actually be more economical in the long run for you to hire someone to come cut it *all* down, get it manageable all over just the one time, and that way just maintaining will be a lot easier. Plus - not sure where you are - but we're about to hit the end of our growing season, so you might not have to worry about it for to much longer.

Good luck!
