I knew it meant that Amy was infertile.

And while I agree it was all resolved far too quickly, the show is aimed at a young audience who probably wouldn't want the drama.

Personally, their little plotline in this episode hit hard because my cousin and her husband split up because of this very reason. My cousin wanted kids but she couldn't and it did destroy their marriage. It's a valid reason for divorce so I don't get all the hate Moffat got for this.

If a man in a relationship wants kids, and the woman cannot (biologically) have them, then why not adopt? Or if the man is so set on having biological kids then there's always the surrogate mother route.

I don't know, maybe there's something I'm not understanding here, but it seems to me that if you love someone then you wouldn't basically blame them (potentially guilting them about something that could be just as hard for them) for something they have no control over (being infertile) and leave them over it when there are other valid options available.

Moffatt got a lot of flack because he's been shoving the idea that women who aren't mothers are somehow incomplete women down people's throats a lot recently. It's understandable that people are starting to get fed up with it.

This is basically what I don't get. I would have thought that the whole pregnancy thing would have come up in conversation at some point. Even if Amy had checks done without Rory knowing I would have expected that he would have been at least had suspicions that something was up (and being a nurse I would have thought he would have suggested talking to a Doctor about fertility checks).

I think the writers did a disservice by not mentioning other options as the whole thing looked like manufactured drama with the added bonus of asshole attempted matyr Amy.

The whole imcomplete women thing bothers me. Some people don't have kids because they can't, some because they don't want to and a thousand other reasons. It doesn't make them lesser people.

THIS.

Adoption and surrogacy are NOT cheap and often more expensive alternatives that couples may not want to take.

Adoption in the UK is similar to most Western practices that means that it can be years before you can able to select a kid to adopt and the process is often very evasive and emotionally taxing.

Surrogacy is often expensive because you have to pay the surrogate not just in fees but you basically have to cover her expenses for nine months. MAYBE you'll get someone for a low price (like a family member) but it's still pricy.

Although it really comes down to we're all being fed with a heteronormative ideal since basically birth. That ideal that we'll marry someone of the opposite sex and have children with each other. People who completely buy into it have a hard time moving away from that ideal when it happens.

My problem with it was the absolute lack of communication between Amy and Rory. The fact that they never discussed it really bothered me. I guess Amy is an avoider, but it felt like Moffat needed some ~drama~ so he decided to break them up. And you're right, infertility is a sensitive issue and a legitimate reason to divorce. IMO, this storyline was very poorly handled. I would have loved to see Amy and Rory hashing out some of their issues after Demon's Run. Alas...

Isn't that how it is with a lot of couples on TV? In a general sense I mean. They never seem to communicate about anything important ever.

Definitely true in some shows, and it's often used as a source of cheap drama. Yet in "The Power of Three," we see Amy and Rory discussing the effect of their traveling on their home life. I would have loved to have seen more scenes like this throughout S6. Little moments like this really help to build up the heart in a show, IMO.

Ah, well, consistency in Doctor Who is never something I've looked for. It's why I don't care if I watch episodes out of order.

I'm sorry you were disappointed.
