laptop fan doesn't ever stfu (internal fan, not a person)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
ok. so I have this macbook that I got second hand. It's... not great, but the thing that annoys me about it the most is that the fan seriously never shuts up. It's always on overdrive no matter what I'm doing. I wear headphones whenever I use it just to block out the sound. Basically I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about this, or if it's just to be expected because it's possibly kind of an old computer (maybe a few years? I don't know). Or am I simply expecting too much of it? To give you an idea, I currently have open: Google Chrome, with 10 tabs open (but none of them loading or doing anything), itunes open but not playing, last fm open but not scrobbling, and mail open. I also have a few things like the MSPA notifier and Dropbox working in the background.

Any advice or info would be appreciated! My old laptop was a crappy dell xps and I swear I never used to have this problem with it. The noise just NEVER STOPS.

Also: I just checked my activity monitor and it seems like the Google Chrome renderer is using most of the cpu. Though to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what that means. But it might be significant? I'm currently looking this problem up on google but if anyone here can help that would be great.

I have a second hand Mac too! (Powerbook, I've had it for about 5 years and couting)
So yes, you're expecting a bit too much from it. You can buy a cooling pad, it helps a bit.

I was hoping expecting too much wouldn't be the answer. =P Oh well. I think I will look in to a cooling pad, since most people have suggested it.

What you want to do is to make sure the macbook is running as cool as possible, and it's not overheating. If your macbook has fan openings, get a can of compressed air or air duster and use it to blow away the gunk on your fan. Make sure the macbook gets good air circulation (not sinking into a pillow, for example) so it cools down faster.

If you know what you are doing, you can open up the macbook, clean and oil the fan, clean the heat sink, and put new thermal paste on the cpu. Don't do it if it's something you've never done before because it can seriously mess up your machine.

ah, I usually use my laptop on a bed so it's probably sinking in to the duvet quite often. Compressed air sounds like a good idea too. I don't think I know what I'm doing enough to do the last suggestion, though! thanks.

I use my laptop on a bed too. I used to put a large useless textbook under it so there was space for air to flow over, under and around the laptop. Any flat, hard surface should work.

I've since demoted the textbook and upgraded to a real laptop pad. There are many designs - flat surface with cushion on the bottom for knees, slightly inclined and flat gridded surface for better air flow, inclined but curved surface for air flow, etc. I don't know if you can find all the designs where you are. The lap pad version is the only one I found so that's the one I have.

Heh. I have a 2007 macbook that sounds like its about to take flight half the time. I think it may just be par for the course. But also, get a chill pad if you don't have one and have the means.

clean out the dust from your fans. depending on what kind of computer you have, it can be easy to do yourself, you can look up videos on youtube to see if you think you'd be comfortable doing it on your own. I got Staples to do mine and it went from being super hot and noisy to only being kind of warm and quiet. it's worth a try. you can also get a think to put underneath that has a fan in it to increase air flow to the underside of your laptop

Get a cooling pad. That should take some of the workload off.

Google Chrome (and unfortunately most browsers worth a damn as well) are resource hogs. Close some of those tabs and close some of the programs you're not using.
