OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously don't get how people are able to write, like, 50 fics in a row of a pairing. I realize people have ~feels~ about their OTP and whatnot, but how can you guys not get sick of those motherfuckers?

For instance, I one wrote a longfic about my slash OTP, and then I tried to start another longfic, but I couldn't take it. I love those assholes. I truly do. But I needed a break. So I ended up writing a few het, slash, and femslash fics involving various pairings, and I felt...cleansed. It was like rehab. When I started the slashfic again, I felt much calmer.

The hilarious part is when people in my fandom are like, "Oh, it's you great you don't just stick to that one slash pairing like everyone does and that you write rare pairs and represent female characters." And it literally has NOTHING to do with that. I like those pairings fine, but it has more to do with the fact that I need a break from the pairing.

Is anyone else like this or am I just crazy?

Some people don't get sick of it. Is it really impossible for you to comprehend other people reacting and acting and feeling differently than you?

Obviously you're not alone, there are always other fans out there that will feel the same and you can see this in the authors that skip around experimenting with different pairings or fandoms or just enjoying all sorts.

I feel the same about jobs. It's a strange idea to me that others can stay in one job for years and years and years because I get bored after like one year no matter how spectacular the job may be.

Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

Okay, not really. I have to admit that I was being a bit hyperbolic. It's just that there are a lot of people like this in my fandom, and I don't know how they can stand it. I admire their dedication, though. XD

I know I'm not alone in that respect, but I sometimes wonder if there are other people who love a pairing, and then just can't stand it anymore and then fall back in love with it again. I feel like I can't have a steady relationship with pairings.

I'm not quite like that, but I know other people who are and can get it.

Most of the people that write a ton of a pairing do so with shorter fics. If there are people out there writing about fifty long fics with the same main pairing in them then I would definitely seriously raise an eyebrow at them.

I could write a bunch of short fics about the same pairing, or one or two long ones, but not a ton in a row.

(Although I do have OTPs I'm not adverse to alternate pairings with the characters in them, if that makes sense. I imagine it's different for people that work themselves into thinking that only one pairing ever makes sense for these characters.)

Oh, yeah, I see that a lot, and that kind of makes sense, but then I see the people who write literally 50 fics that are between 10k-100k words for the same pairing, and I just can't comprehend how they can handle having to work with the same characters being together over and over again without having a break.

Personally, after one longfic I need a break.

That's...wow.

In that case, it might be a saturation thing? I'm guessing those pairings are at least fairly popular in those fandoms? In which case they might also feel like there's not much point writing anything else, since people read and like and comment on their fics with that pairing.

It might not even occur to them that they could write another pairing, or they might not want to if they're getting praise for the one they do write consistently.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Most of the time they write for a really popular het or slash pairing, and they kind of build up a reader-base so I guess they don't see the point? I think they just get so wrapped up in that pairing that they kind of end up not thinking about other pairing possibilities.

A lot of them are actually really good writers, so I get kind of sad that they don't ever write for other pairings. I one time got a BNF in my fandom to write a crack pairing for me, and it was totally awesome and glorious, but, afterward, she was like, "Yeah, I'm never doing that again."

Yeah, I've written lots of fic for my favorite pairings (especially one) but it's all short stuff. And I usually take little breaks to write some other fandom or what-have-you.

I'm sure there are people who can write tons of long fic about the same pairing, and good for them, but I can't write long fic at all.

(I also almost always have other people I'll pair the characters in my OTPs up with, for whatever that's worth.)

Re: OTPs

I can write long fic, sort of, but I can't write long fic with a pairing as the focus. If it's there, it tends to be in the background--all of my potential long fics are action/intrigue type things as opposed to romance. I can write shorter romance fics, but not long ones.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who likes to switch up character dynamics in fic sometimes.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm...Well, I'm a multi-shipper so I tend to skip between 'otps' depending on my mood anyways...but some people just don't get sick of their favorite pairings, so they don't feel the need for a break. It's really...just that simple, most of the time. -shrugs-

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Maybe it's because I think of it in terms of food. For instance, I might really like a smoothie, but I would get sick of it if I had it every day, so, instead, I have it every week.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I almost always end up with only one (occasionally two) pairings I like in any given fandom. Dragon Age: Fenris/Anders, Avengers: Thor/Loki, Harry Potter: Snarry, Assassin's Creed: Ezio/Leo, Altair/Malik SPN: Dean/Castiel, Skyrim: my OC/Ulfric, etc.

So as long as I'm active in that particular fandom I'll only be interested in reading/writing/drawing about those specific characters. It's weird, and I branch out a bit sometimes to reading gen about other characters, but I'm just REALLY not interested in other pairings once I find my OTP for that canon. I've even tried forcing myself to multi-ship because it seems more fun, but I always end up feeling guilty, like I'm making my favorite pair cheat on each other. Ultimately its just not as satisfying for me to skip around. I like my *~OTPs~*.

That said, I do create for multiple fandoms at any one time. So if I'm burnt out on Fenders I'll spend a day in a different fandom to recharge, say.

OT but do you have any good snarry or Dean/Castiel recs? I used be be intertwined with both fandoms, but recently I have gotten out of touch. Anything would be awesome :)

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, you picked the two pairings I listed that I don't actually have a premade reclist for! I dropped out of the SPN fandom after S6, and I can't find my old bookmarks, but here's someone else's list.

http://tracy-loo-who.livejournal.com/89415.html

As for Snarry, have you tried the Snarry Reader? They have a pretty comprehensive list. And here's two that I have bookmarked.

There's also this rec list, which might have other parts to it for shorter fic?

Haha. It's okay. I just like hearing about other people's fav fics since I always find something new to read :)

I do know all those rec collections, but thank you anyways! I'll just give them an extra look over to see if I've missed anything.

Thanks so much for these! I haven't read most of these yet, but I remember a lot of the authors names from way back. It's nice to know they've still been keeping fandom alive!

I am looking for more recent fics since I have been away from fandom for a while. That or older overlooked fics to read. So these fit the bill! (I've only read the white road and it was brilliant.)

Thanks again!

You're welcome. I think a good number of the old crowd is still around. There are new blood too like abrae, asecretchord, carolinelamb, oliversnape and starcrossedgirl. That reminds me, I haven't read Chrysalis by starcrossedgirl (http://starcrossedgirl.livejournal.com/326711.html) yet but everyone from the old to the new say it's absolutely brilliant.

All the Snarry fests are over at snape_potter now. The masterlists from the fests is a good place to start looking for new fics.

Thanks again snarry fic fairy! I'm excited to start reading snarry again.

I'll have to look those authors up! The only one that sounds familiar is starcrossedgirl... I think I read some of her Castiel/dean fics a few years ago. Funny how fandoms are so connected.

I haven't been checking out the snarry fests so I'll look over that as well :)

:)

Another good place to start is the Snarry Reader (http://snarry-reader.dreamwidth.org/). I think it's better to start at the monthly updates - newest update first - and work your way back since the masterlists can get very intimidating.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It varies for everyone, obviously, but for me - hell, I even got sick of READING my OTP. To be fair, they're the most popular pairing in the fandom and the amount of fic just exploded after the canon ended, so a lot of it felt samey after a while.

I can't even write them now, the best I can do is allude to them in genfic.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm probably the kind of person you say you don't get? I'm capable of writing a LOT of fic for one particular pairing, but it depends on that pairing. How do I put this... I always get interested in a pairing because of its particular dynamics, right? And obviously the characters are going to have different dynamics with other characters - a dynamic I'm not interested in - so I'm not interested in writing other pairings with my OTP characters.

If I want to explore the characters (let's call them Alex and Bob) outside of their relationship with each other, I tend to write genfic - I guess that's my version of a palate cleanser. But in terms of pairings, I'm only interested in the Alex/Bob dynamic, so why would I write anything else?

And I think I do manage to do different things with my Alex/Bob. I've had at least a few people comment that I'm particularly good at writing Alex in a lot of different ways but always keeping him plausible. If Alex is interpreted a little differently, how does that change his dynamic with Bob? That's the sort of thing that interests me. It probably helps that I'm quite fond of alternate canon fics, of the "change one little thing and see what happens" variety. So I'm not writing multiple longfic of exactly the same dynamic/characters - I get to explore variations that are diverse enough I don't get bored with the pairing.

(And just to clarify: my longest fic hit 150k, and I've written four others that average to about 30k each. My one-shots tend to be around 5k, and I occasionally write short fic of about 1-2k when I'm bored with the long stuff.)

To be honest, when I slow down/stop writing fic for a particular OTP, it's usually because I've fallen out of the fandom in general. It's been over a year since I wrote anything about the OTP I've been most prolific for... but I still construct stories about them in my head. I'm still not bored with them, and I still don't have any desire to pair them up with other characters. If RL stops kicking me repeatedly in the face, I might one day put some of these ideas down and go back to posting them again.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
SA

The numbers I gave about my fics, btw? All in one fandom. I have other fandoms I haven't been as prolific in, but I've certainly written lengthy fics in them as well. =P

Re: OTPs

I write like that, actually. I've written six novel-length fics (for NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo), and five of them have the same pairing. They're also the main pair in most of my oneshots. It's not like... fifty fics in a row, I can manage one or two (aiming for three, this year!), but they're the ones I keep getting ideas for. It's more... I get story ideas, and then those characters insinuate themselves into the storyline. (Plus, one has been a sequel of another, so that obviously needed the same characters/pairings!)

I don't know, I'm just not bored of them. If I did write a lot more, I might, but I don't write enough for that to be an issue.

Re: OTPs

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I am like you, I love my OTPs, but usually I'm only able to write just one great fic about them, and that's it. I tried once writing for a comm like that. Nope, it didn't end well. ;_;
