Stephenie Meyer is putting out a frankly disturbing relationship and selling it as true love.

Actually, even if Meyer sold it as disturbing as it is, people would probably still buy it as true love, if fandom is any indication. Twilight is just a symptom of how popular culture already views romance.

I don't think fandom is as much of an indication as it seems; though I could just be frequenting sane fandoms and missing a lot of the crazy. Regardless, I don't deny that some people would buy it as romance regardless, and that would be their problem. It's just MORE of a problem that the writer, who is the one sending out the problematic message, isn't admitting that it's unhealthy.

Hm, I disagree that her admitting it's unhealthy would matter at all. It would not make anyone else who shared her inclinations - you know, the sincere fans who earned Twilight an unholy amount of money - any more able to engage their fantasies critically, which is where the problem lies.

If I may make a Harry Potter reference, in the Prince's Tale, when JK Rowling describes Snape's appearance when he first met Lily, she could have described him in a way that made him "unlovable", in a way that you think "ew" instead of feeling sympathy for him. But she didn't.

If Meyer had presented her story as a disturbed relationship, rather than as 'true love', there would have been a difference in reaction.

I suppose there's always some people to take it the wrong way, but there would be definitely less. It likely wouldn't be so mainstream as a Twilight fan to think it was 'true love'.

So perhaps Twilight is in part to blame. Though admittance in itself would do little to alleviate the damage already allegedly done. It would be consolation, if nothing else.
