I allow anon comments. It's even in my whatever-profiles: "allows all comments, even anon." I never get anon comments anyway, even on really popular works.

I guess people are so used to not being allowed to comment anon that they don't even try?

Idk, personally some people may not even be aware that turning comments off for anons is a thing. I'm pretty sure it's default for both LJ and DW. Or, at least, it wasn't until I'd had my account for weeks that I realized there was a setting for it and mine was off.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's prob true for some people but I've run into a lot of people on LJ that have turned off anon comments and have a notice on their site saying they don't accept them. Makes me sad. Probably a result of the massive spam bots that were going around awhile ago. Anonymous Russian spam was everywhere!

I got a lot of that. But spam bots =/= anons; not sure what the connection is?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The spam bots were leaving anon comments full of spam. Turn off anon comments, no more spam.

Ah. I was getting logged-in spam comments. I guess it varies.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not so much trolls as spam. I used to allow anon comments, particularly because I crosspost between LJ and DW, and I never had any problems. Then I got on someone's spam list and started to get dozens of spam comments a day, requiring me to change my settings.

Spam & trolls. I've had both. Plus I like to thank the person leaving feedback.

At least on AO3 you can kudo as a guest :)

This. I had a troll comment on every damn fic I wrote for a certain pairing just to tell me they all sucked. (You'd think after a while they'd just go read something else...) So finally I turned off anon everywhere.

I have sympathy for the OP though. I have weird computer/online quirks sometimes too.

I'd say it depends entirely on your situation. Here's a really unfortunate example of what a nightmare allowing anon comments can be if you attracted the wrong kind of attention (scroll down to the comments, the journal entry isn't that relevant):

Puppet account for comments? Really bland name that no one will remember/associate?

I got sick of thinking I'd gotten a real comment, especially on a fic, only to find that it was spam. Sometimes I'll still turn anon back on for a couple days after posting something new, but I tend to forget.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Back in 2004, my husband left for his second of four tours to Iraq and/or Afghanistan. At the time, because I'd had a good run on all of my fics with the commenters, I made the mistake of thinking everyone on the internet is kind and thoughtful. I thought nothing of stating in a posted chapter that I apologized for being late and stated the reason why. My fic was hit with twenty different comments about my husband "murdering innocent Iraqi babies" and how proud I must be of my killer.

I haven't posted a chapter with so much as a "This story happened because ... " note or allowed anonymous comments since.

Not to be rude, OP, but people have their reasons, whether they share them with you or not.

Yeah, it is too bad. I've always allowed anon comments and never had an issue with them. I do get the occasional weird Russian spam but - it's not like it's a hassle to deal with.

An anon comment is just as good as a 'named' one! :)

I discovered a couple weeks ago that DW had somehow re-set my defaults so that I wasn't allowing anon comments. I was pretty upset, because I always have welcomed anon feedback. The few trolls and spammers I've had have been easy enough to ignore or delete.

I rarely get anon commenters, though. Usually it's just people who don't realize they aren't logged in until after they hit "post."

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure authors' rights to cut down harassment overrides your weirdness about not wanting to log in. Suck it up and either log in or freaking don't. This is not a thing to hate over.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I have this problem on tumblr; I don't want to make an account, because it's enough of a time suck checking the pages of the couple of people who write the best fic; if I were able to follow people, and get all that content delivered to one place, I'd never get anything else done.

Anyway, about the only way you can communicate anon on tumblr are 'Asks', which don't allow links, line breaks, etc...

My only advice is to check bugmenot, though honestly it's pretty rare you can find an account there that isn't burned or just fake.
