That depends on the person and the music. With some music, I could see the lyrics being sort of superfluous...but with pop? The lyrics kind of matter, because they don't have the strongest instrumentals out there.

To me, it's the opposite. Pop is about being catchy and fun, and the melody is the most important part. The lyrics are just there so they only sing "lalala" for a third of the song xD

The point of pop is to get you moving. It's to get your head nodding or your body shaking. The lyrics are completely secondary.

The instrumentals are not complex, or "deep." But that's not what's being sought. What's being sought is something more basic, more primal. And that's okay.
