I like it too:) I do think it's lazy from a writing perspective and doesn't help the story often, but it helps you to project yourself into the character. It's also common in children's games and fiction(Harry Potter might as well have been a silent protagonist, after all).

I wish Harry Potter had been a silent protagonist. Then maybe he would've been less of an annoying little shit. One of my least favorite characters in the series, ngl.

Writing for video games isn't the same as fiction writing tho. Not really fair to call it lazy.
