I like it too:) I do think it's lazy from a writing perspective and doesn't help the story often, but it helps you to project yourself into the character. It's also common in children's games and fiction(Harry Potter might as well have been a silent protagonist, after all).

I wish Harry Potter had been a silent protagonist. Then maybe he would've been less of an annoying little shit. One of my least favorite characters in the series, ngl.

Except in Order of the Phoenix where half of the book is him shouting out his angst in capslock.

Actually... yeah I don't really think this comment is true at all.

Writing for video games isn't the same as fiction writing tho. Not really fair to call it lazy.

It's basically a go-ahead for 'fill in a personality here in fanfic'.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it too and, like many others, I was disappointed with Metroid: Other M when they gave Samus a voice. Yeah, I know she speaks in Metroid Fusion, that I didn't mind so much. But to have her narrating every single thing happening in the cutscenes even though we're SEEING most of what she's talking about - ugh!

And even though it's cartoon we all know how much of a joy it was for Link to have a voice. :P

Only game I really like where the protagonists talk are games where you're able to choose what they say or how you play the game affects how they talk. Like Shepard in ME or Harry Mason in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved all the talking in Other M, because you can switch between English/Japanese for Audio AND Subs, so you can learn a lot of Japanese from it. I think all the other Metroid games have E/J options, but most have virtually no dialog.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay. I like lots of badly-written things, too.

Well aren't you a just a passive-aggressive bundle of dandelion seeds.

I like silent protagonists too. The ones like the Pokemon avatars, Chell, or Gordon Freeman, rpgs where you have a blank slate party like in Etrian Odyssey, the ones who don't actually express anything but have to follow a linear story or game, I like them because I get to fill in the personality for them based on how everyone else reacts to them (and it's kind of fun seeing the differences in how other people interpret them).

Mario, the Links from N64 and onwards, and whatever, I like them because they're expressive without dialogue.

Yeah, from Ocarina onwards, Link has definitely had his own personality. The earliest ones? Sure, they were basically avatars, but hell, most of the later Links even have dialogue options!

(And thus we learnt that Skyward Sword Link has deadpan snarker tendencies. "Nice hair." "Am I late?" "What shoulders?")

i'm on the fence about silent protags. i love when they clearly have some kind of established story and personality behind them (ala gordon freeman), and you slowly pick out what kind of person they are as the game progresses.
if it's just a 100% blank slate character, i usually dont get too emotionally invested in the character im playing

As does Nick Park.

Games w/ non-speaking protagonist were the only ones I played as a kid, and I liked them because it was easy to pretend it was me on those adventures.

I think both talking and non-talking protagonists have their charms. Both have special places in my heart.

But to talk about non-talking ones I always feel connected to them in a way that is different from talking ones. Because non-talking ones don't talk I have to make up their thoughts or their "voice" so they end up more like me. They are more an extension of myself, a really cool extension, but still an extension. This rarely happens with talking ones.

Ah, sorry I rambled. I just meant to say that I love both, I just love them differently.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just meant to say that I love both, I just love them differently.

Pretty much how I approach them.

I like the talkers as a character, like any other talking character in the game (well, assuming I enjoy their personality). I like the non-talkers, because they're kind of like an alter-ego of me, yet at the same time I usually see them as their own person, too, somehow.

So talkers, I feel more like I'm just there for the ride, or story, or whatever you want to call it, even as I control them, but the non-talkers, the adventure feels a little more personal, like it's actually me along with The Hero(ine), taking on this quest to save stuff.

I've always hated it that Link doesn't talk.

I don't know what's wrong with me. I've just...always wanted him to talk. Really, really badly.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, I don't get why people abhor the idea of a talking Link. We have the technology, people.

Of course, that doesn't keep me from worrying about who they'd cast. I remember when Square started casting actors for Final Fantasy characters from originally silent games into their voiced sequels and spin-offs, some of those choices were truly awful.

Look into Atlus made games and Breath of Fire series. More of them there.

I don't see how a silent protagonist hurts the story. Video game stories aren't just about telling a story; they're about bringing the player through a story. If you build a world around them and then let them be who they are by not giving their avatar much character, it can be extremely immersive.

Like, Portal 2? I have never felt more part of a game than when I was playing that. Everybody writes fic about Chell's character but TBH when I'm playing I just imagine she's me. %D;

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought it was really annoying and I frankly can't stand it lol To me, it seems like you're just playing as a brainless meat puppet.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
All Chell has is a very minor case of serious brain damage. She can't help it :(

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
When playing video games with a silent protagonist, I like it because I can pretend I'm the character and make up my own responses to characters questions, including using the mouse to nod or shake my head when I agree or disagree with them.
