I like silent protagonists too. The ones like the Pokemon avatars, Chell, or Gordon Freeman, rpgs where you have a blank slate party like in Etrian Odyssey, the ones who don't actually express anything but have to follow a linear story or game, I like them because I get to fill in the personality for them based on how everyone else reacts to them (and it's kind of fun seeing the differences in how other people interpret them).

Mario, the Links from N64 and onwards, and whatever, I like them because they're expressive without dialogue.

Yeah, from Ocarina onwards, Link has definitely had his own personality. The earliest ones? Sure, they were basically avatars, but hell, most of the later Links even have dialogue options!

(And thus we learnt that Skyward Sword Link has deadpan snarker tendencies. "Nice hair." "Am I late?" "What shoulders?")
