I'm having a really hard time articulating why this secret bothers me, but it really does.

Like, sorry your country isn't a major imperial power anymore, Britain, I know you long for those halcyon days when you ruled over literally everything and glorify them, and shit on America for taking your place. I don't know, I'm being irrational about this, but there's something about the cheapness of the anti-Americanism, coming from a Brit, that really does bother me. The glories of the British empire were not that glorious.

Sorry to (probably) make this into a dumb politics discussion. But that's my honest response to this secret: I feel like OP's anti-Americanism is ill-informed and gratuitous at best.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You're assuming that in order to be anti-American, a person has to be pro-Empire which, um, no. They really, really don't.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm saying that I find it difficult to really care about someone's anti-Americanism when their British nationalism is so unmeasured and unsubtle, and amounts to "Yay Brits, so much better than America!" without taking into account imperialism or, indeed, the fact that Britain has been riding shotgun on most shit America does that you could even object to.

and of course ALL of us agree with what our government has been doing. Um, no.
I love my country (NOT the damn Empire) but I loathe its governments.

I think it's hardly an out there interpretation though? I mean OP kind of liked the idea of America being under British rule.

ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

This. This secret is supporting colonialism, no way around it.

I think everyone knows how horrible colonialism is, and to make any statement in support of is pretty abhorrent.

Also British imperialism fucked up a lot of places all around the world before the US learned how to do it ourselves.

He's right. I'm British and the only good things about our shit'ole are our TV, our literature and Alton Towers Resort

God, this has to be the most obnoxious attitude just behind Americas constant unyielding self aggrandization.

No, we've done and continue to do a huge range of great things. Go open a fucking history book (like some nasty things to, no doubt about it, but our scientific and academic achievements alone).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I know and respect all that, it's just my opinion at this moment in time.
Also Nemesis is best rollercoaster and i can't wait for SW7

I don't have a problem with Anti-American sentiments, but I always find it funny that the soft Cultural Imperialism that America engages in constantly is like a shadow play of what Britain did for centuries. You Brits are all right, tho:) *goes to see if new QI episode is on youtube yet*

Yeah, I mean a lot of it is that the British Empire was from an earlier time, but they were pretty nasty about a lot of things. American cultural imperialism is more like the roommate who keeps the pantry stocked with tasty junk food and keeps saying "help yourself."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Lol yeah, except when they're assassinating democratically elected leaders, flooding poor countries with American-produced products (which the American companies are paid for) which price out locally produced products, or full-on invading places.

Yep, just pure open pantry.

(Pssst, most Britons at the time thought we were helping other countries with our Empire too, in a generous, self-sacrificing way. Maybe you should consider why other countries don't think your behaviour is so unimpeachable)

(But I'd still have rather been in a British colony than a French, Spanish, Portugese or Italian one. Better odds. Look at poor Somalia.)

Yeeeaaaah, I feel pretty skeeved if people think the british empire was 'glorious' and hell I'm from N.Ireland and have a british passport (I'm about as patriotic as a... not very patriotic thing in this case but whatever).

America is far from perfect but I somehow doubt the answer is to put it under british rule again. That's just creepy to me as an idea. Also laughably impossible anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
*wonders if you are the same anon bothered by the flag code being broken from yesterday*

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
nah, don't even know what that is

different anon, sorry

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who thinks the British were good people back then needs to get a clue. There's a reason so many of its colonies rebelled: the British were fucking dicks and still are to an extent. The US hasn't been all that great, either, but we're trying and we don't look at a horrifically bloody, racist, and xenophobic time as the high point of our history.

Really?

You do know how you guys treat the period of the founding fathers, or your idealised 1950s? How about the confederates and all the south shall rise again bullshit?
