That one never occurred to me as a kid--I think I thought of them as sort of roommates--but I could see it now.

They taught him a lot in the books - wasn't that part of the overall theme in the movie, or no? I can't remember anymore, it's been ages.

The movie and the books are very different. As mentioned other places in this thread, Walt told his writers not to read the book. In both he has adoptive wolf mother, father and siblings. In the books, Bagheera and Baloo are sorta like uncles to him. In the movies, Bagheera basically stays out of his life until Mowgli needs to leave the jungle, and Baloo meets him for the first time about a day or so before Mowgli goes to the village.
