In general? Bunch of spite-stanning because Moffat is the worst person in the world and some Tumblr Sherlock fans are batshit, and the Lucy Liu stans. I didn't even know she had any until I walked into an Elementary post on ONTD.

That episode was leaked early, though, so a bunch of people have had more than a week to watch and enjoy and ruminate over it, and some small number of those people started writing fic immediately. Same thing happened in Leverage fandom. And I know there've been several TV shows that got nominated for Yuletide (this year and in years past) on the strength of one or even no aired episodes. It's not as though this fannish behavior is unique to Elementary.
