how can Elementary even *have* a fandom to speak of yet. THERE HAS BEEN ONE EPISODE. ONE.

That episode was leaked early, though, so a bunch of people have had more than a week to watch and enjoy and ruminate over it, and some small number of those people started writing fic immediately. Same thing happened in Leverage fandom. And I know there've been several TV shows that got nominated for Yuletide (this year and in years past) on the strength of one or even no aired episodes. It's not as though this fannish behavior is unique to Elementary.
