So it's John/Sherlock shippers who are big on Irene's portrayal, on account of how it theoretically impacts John's sexuality, got it.

Speaking only for myself: No, not really. As far as I'm concerned, a gay woman telling a straight guy they're both in love with the same man doesn't matter for shit if the show never bothers to follow up on both parts. So far, all we've gotten is the gay woman shown falling in in love with the man (ie, the straight relationship--which is the norm in our society). Where's the gay relationship?

Oh right, thanks for correcting me. I'm not actually a John/Sherlock shipper, but I do think John loves him in a way he doesn't love other people, and I got the impression from both the show and interviews that Irene was meant to love him in that fascinated way as well. Even though she appears to show sexual interest in him, I felt that was more showing how she likes to use sex as a weapon.

No, she is physically attracted to him. So if there's supposed some comparison between John and Irene, so is he. But we only see the results of her attraction.
