So it's John/Sherlock shippers who are big on Irene's portrayal, on account of how it theoretically impacts John's sexuality, got it.

There are multiple movies and comics featuring lesbian characters who date and have major relationships with men, while their relationships with women are more of a background detail. It's not progressive, envelope pushing, avant-garde, or whatever else, especially when that's what a show has to offer in the way of gay characters.

Speaking only for myself: No, not really. As far as I'm concerned, a gay woman telling a straight guy they're both in love with the same man doesn't matter for shit if the show never bothers to follow up on both parts. So far, all we've gotten is the gay woman shown falling in in love with the man (ie, the straight relationship--which is the norm in our society). Where's the gay relationship?

Wasn't Sarah her girlfriend?

It's Kate, and she was her assistant.

And, sorry, I meant where's the gay relationship between John and Sherlock.

Oh right, thanks for correcting me. I'm not actually a John/Sherlock shipper, but I do think John loves him in a way he doesn't love other people, and I got the impression from both the show and interviews that Irene was meant to love him in that fascinated way as well. Even though she appears to show sexual interest in him, I felt that was more showing how she likes to use sex as a weapon.

No, she is physically attracted to him. So if there's supposed some comparison between John and Irene, so is he. But we only see the results of her attraction.

I can't be the only one who wants more movie!lesbians to be unambiguously into women. Sexuality is confusing enough IRL, I just wanna see some happy ladies being together and in love and all that.

Wait... lesbians who are actually attracted to women and not men?! That's just crazy talk!

I talked to a girl who said the reason that happens in mainstream media is because it's "boring" to explore a lesbian relationship and that it's just good storytelling to experiment with a character's sexuality and not homophobic at all.

I guess that's why you only ever see heterosexual people only hook up with same sex partners on tv.

Yeah... for all the, "sexuality is fluid, and people experiment, and people aren't 100% gay or straight!"; when it comes to the media, 99.9% of the characters who go outside their stated sexuality are gays being attracted to/having sex with/etc. people of the opposite sex. Where's all the sexuality fluidity/experimentation/not 100%-ness when it comes to straight people?

Please tell me you or someone pointed that out to her, and/or pointed out that lesbian characters actually into women is a rarity?

If Tab A into Slot B wasn't so popular, IKEA wouldn't do such a good business. ;-)

What? I'm not a John/Sherlock shipper. I'm just saying if people are convinced John loves him despite the fact that there's no evidence of him being anything other than straight, I don't get why it's hard to believe a lesbian woman could love him too. It doesn't have to be sexual.
