I see where are you coming from and I get that, but I have to clarify some things.
OK, it is a bad idea telling people from other countries what they should be calling themselves, but Americans should also realize it was not exactly the most brilliant of ideas to appropiate a term that was intended to use for people from a whole continent. I mean, you at least should aknowledge that is always going to stir controversy in other countries whether you like it or not.
I for once find it strange, as if some random country in Europe started calling themselves Europeans regardless of other countries, but oh well...

Hahaha. What? It's not the same at all as a European country suddenly deciding to term its citizens "Europeans." Because unlike your ridiculous example, it wasn't sudden, it has been in established use for centuries, and nobody is even sure how the name "America" really originated. There are only theories.
